Happy 70th anniversary to my wife and her fellow Red Sox fans

70th anniversary of what you might ask? Well, it just occurred to me that it was exactly 70 years ago when in 1941, Ted Williams batted .406 for the season, which no other MLB player since has hit .400 in a season (George Brett with his 1980 average of .390 and Tony Gwynn with his 1994 average of .394 cut short by the strike came the closest). I'm sure many of you know this story but I'll share it anyway. In the last day of the season (a doubleheader), Ted's average was exactly .39955 (which would round up to .400). His manager offered to let him not play in the doubleheader so as not to risk his .400 average, but Ted didn't think he really deserved to hit .400 unless he played. As it happened, he got enough hits in the double header (I forget how many exactly) to increase his average to .406.

So again, a happy 70th anniversary to my wife and her fellow Red Sox fans.

PS: Just to show I'm a good sport, I also extend a happy 70th anniversary to Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak to the Yankees fans here. Which also has never happened since (the closest anyone came was Pete Rose's 44 game streak in 1978, which tied the NL record set by Willie Keeler in 1897).
