OT: Please Vote For My Photo in a Photo Contest

Apologies for the wayyyyyy OT post, but figured I'd shamelessly plug a new hobby I took up about a year ago... travel photography. I just entered my first photo contest being run by Kumuka in the Kumuka Travel Photo Competition. I'm currently in 6th place, and the top 12 will be short-listed for final judging. Voting ends September 12, and you can vote once per day.

I know a don't know a ton of you on the board, but any support I can get would be much appreciated! The photograph I entered is one I took earlier this year at Tiger's Nest Monastery in Bhutan (picture is below).

You can vote by clicking on the link below:

http://apps.facebook.com/promotionshq/contests/127135/voteable_entries/25604458?order=recency

You should see the photo, and then a green “Vote Now” button on the right side, right above the photo. Just click that "Vote Now" button.

You may need to "allow" the (annoying) Facebook Voting App but you can delete it once voted by going to account settings - applications - edit - delete.

Thanks so much!

First of all let me say I don't partake in hallucinogens or even drink alcohol, but I see something in your photo that is pretty cool...

Look in the lower right side to the right of the tree. There is a nearly full figure image of a monk with his hands clasped in front of him in the traditional "namaste" greeting, facing the monastery.

Doug - thanks for the kind words... I'll try the link again (should bring you right to the voting page on Facebook)... I think the issue may have been the "" things got caught up in the other link above.

    I voted.

Heckuva nice pic - I worked in a high end camera shop for 4 years, selling Nikons and such, so I think I know a good photograph when I see it, and that is a very nice one.

    Good luck!

Thanks so much for the kind words all. Moose - I'm trying to spot what you're seeing. Can you give me a little more direction on where I'm looking?!

    Interesting pic, great subject
See if you can photoshop the sun spot out of the pic, and maybe darken the washed out sky a little

Wow - never saw that. Thanks!

As for the photoshop - I actually have a photoshopped copy, but was not allowed to for the competition. I agree though, the photo was a little overexposed (I think).

Thanks again for everyone who helped out. I'm now sitting in 5th place.

Jon, beautiful shot, but I'll disagree with it being overexposed. You still have detail in the highlights, and if you had closed down your shadows would block up. I think it's perfectly exposed, at least on my monitor.
In regards to them not allowing photoshopped images, how could they tell? I think what they probably mean is they don't want montaged images, but if you used a bit of layering for contrast range or pumped the sky a bit that really isn't any different than shooting raw and making adjustments in the processing.
Anyway, vote cast, best of luck with it!

Thanks again to all who have voted (and commented). Griffins - you make some really good points, esp shooting raw and editing - I, too, see no difference. Truth be told, I just got into travel photography maybe a year ago, so I'm still such a novice (although, like anything, I learn more all the time). For the most part, though, I've avoided shooting raw with the camera, simply because conversion with photoshop/mac is a pain... or at least I have found it to be using the dng converter. I did just get CS5.5, though, and it seems to have some awesome tools that I can play around with (more so than CS3 which I was using before).

Also - for the PM that asked camera/lens... I was using a Nikon D5000 with a Tokina 12-24 DXII and a CPL filter.

I'd have a better chance climbing that mountain in your picture than explaining what the above means!

Jon- you should play around with shooting raw- you have a lot more control over a variety of things, and it's non destructive, unlike making adjustments to a tif or a jpg (adjustments to the latter should be avoided at all costs). CS5 makes it even easier than the previous versions. I even shoot raw when I'm using my point and shoot (Canon G12) and would on the iphone if I could.

Thanks for the heads up - do you normally shoot only raw, or do you shoot in the raw/jpeg setting so a copy of each is made? I know it's double the space on memory cards, but with how cheap storage is these days, it's easy to pick up an exra 16gb SD card to carry.

For work (I'm an advertising photographer) I only shoot raw. For fun stuff I'll shoot jpg and raw, so I've got something quick to email or post on fb, but if it's something that is a keeper I'll always process the raw and save that for books, prints, etc.
For images shot in uncontrolled lighting situations (low light, stage lighting, especially underwater) shooting raw can make a huge difference, since it will need a bit of tweeking is different areas.
