1981P quarter oddity.
The type 1 photo is of a R in AMERICA that in my coin books ( dansco books) stopped at 1974. Yet this 1981P has the same tiny hole and older style R.

Then I have this 1981P that has the newer R that looks to be normal from 1977 to 1998.

What would cause the R to be different in 1981P. I think the 1979S 81 S had an clear and filled thing going on with the mint marks but what about this R on the reverse.
On the Type 1 ( as i call it) the R in AMERICA is different than the other Rs on the reverse.

I have no idea as to why the R is of the old style but to say

yep, it just mushed the letters down to displace the metal into the hole more making it smaller.
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
...ditto
There is a change made in mid 1980 on the reverse. There is a line (the end of the arrowhead tip, but it looks like a line) that runs from an upper arrowhead to the adjacent leaf just to the left of it. IN 1977-1980 it is a straight line. In 1980-1985 , it has been modified and slants downward. Yes, 1980 comes both ways. In 1986, it is staight again. In your picture it looks to me to be slanting downward, but I can't tell for sure.
on about 96% of the '81-P's. It might be a variation of the type "c" and I intend to investigate
as time allows.
I don't believe this coin has "counting wheel" damage. It appears to merely have a weak strike
around the periphery which is especially common for the date.

have a real variety here. It appears that both the Philly and Denver type "c's
come with a large or small hole in the "R". I've not seen any type "d's with
a small hole yet. The difference is small enough that it might not attract a
lot of collector attention.
The mint set coins are type "c" with large hole. 1981 rolls are not very common.
I intend to watch this and get back to the thread when I know more.

anomaly. All the small holes I've seen are weakly struck and this hole is tapered.
