Collected in the 80's, but back at it thanks to reading this board!

Hello all. I've been reading this forum for a couple weeks now and just now joined. Though this seems like I'm filling out a personal to post on some dating site, I'll introduce myself. I started collecting cards as a kid in 1985, mostly rack packs and wax packs from the local drug store. I really started getting into it in 1986 and bought wax pack after wax pack of '86 Topps. This lasted until about 1990 when I just lost interest in it altogether. I came back to the hobby around 2002, but bought some bad wax from a seller on ebay (who I think has been discussed on here, he's from Missouri) and was finished again. I mean the odds of not getting one single star card from two boxes of 1984 Topps has to be astronomical. I'm not just talking about Mattingly, there weren't even any Boggs, Sandberg, Trammell, Ripken, O Smith, heck, I don't even think I got a Joe Niekro. I must have received 25 or 30 Jay Johnstone's and Amos Otis cards. It was pure bad, searched wax. I just now started getting into the hobby again after finding my old vintage cards and some of the 80 's cards from my youth.

I have every Topps Detroit Tigers team set from 1952 through 1960 (with the exception of those two '52 high number cards), the entire 1959 Topps set and the entire 1971 set. Along with other assorted stuff (some 70's and a lot of 80's, all Topps). I've never submitted anything to PSA, but thinking about joining the club and submitting. I'll post some scans of some of the 50's cards that I think may have potential just to see what you all think.

By the way, you all highly recommend BBCE, so I went ahead and bought some packs from them on Tuesday. If anyone saw that auction for 216 1986 Topps wax pack miswraps, that's the one I picked up. I just had that itch to rip into some packs and what better way to get back into the game than with some of the packs I first opened.

Also have an itch to get some 1988 Topps wax, junk I know, but that card of Tommy Lasorda in the golf cart was great!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • Welcome back! I am similar to you. I started in '86 and stopped around '92. I just got back into it about a year ago. Now I can buy all the '80s wax I want to.

image Hey Chris, great intro and welcome to the board!!!

I remember those 86 miswrap packs BBCE had for sale. Good luck ripping those babies.

Looking forward to your future posts. Like Doug said, stay active and you'll have a blast.

    Collecting:
Any unopened Baseball cello and rack packs and boxes from the 1970's and early 1980s.
  • It's too bad it costs more to ship the boxes than what the boxes are actually worth. If I lived closer to BBCE (I'm in Texas) I'd actually consider picking up a case of 1988 or 1989 Topps to break open on rainy, boring days. Maybe pull about 100 Terry Puhl's or Mike Loynd cards...then keep them for some reason.

Maybe there are some local shows where you can pick up some junk wax from the late 80s. There are a lot of guys on the board from Texas so maybe one of them can chime in with some suggestions on where to find some. Shouldn't have to worry about anything being resealed in those boxes.

I also started collecting in '85! Those were the good ole days! Welcome back to the hobby. You won't go wrong buying wax from BBCE.

    Have fun!

  • I'm not sure what is worse, that you cut down longtime (and I mean LONGTIME, he might still be in the later part of the lineup) KC Royals star Amos Otis..or that you would save 100 Mike Loynd 1988 Topps cards.

Good luck with your 1986 Topps rips....I hope you pull 100 Pittsburgh Pirates Leaders Rick Rhoden Cards...and they are all off centered!

  • Thanks, guys! It seems like everyone I've talked to hit that collecting "Wall" around 1990 or 91, then slowly came back to it 10 or 15 years later. I think it's in the blood stream. It's hard to explain to someone who doesn't "get it". At least my girlfriend tolerates it, she likes to see some of the poorly photographed or badly posed cards. One example comes to mind of an O Pee Chee Bernie Federko card from the late 80's. I'll have to find it in a box.

  • I never knocked Amos! Wished he would have made it to 1985 with KC!

  • I was just joking with you Chris. (Besides, wishing someone a 100 Pirates Leaders Rick Rhoden cards is likely cruel and unusual punishment.)

Looking forward to seeing some scans. Feel free to scan all the your favorite 1950-1970's Tigers cards...perhaps even consider a thread for such. I am sure we would all enjoy it.

Our stories sound very similar. And BBCE is a great place to buy from, especially junk wax. I'm in the process of opening a case of '91 Score with the only hit being Chipper Jones RC and a long shot at a signed Mantle card. But hey, it's fun! And their shipping isn't too bad, as I got a case and a few other assorted wax boxes (and some 70's packs) for $35 shipping to NC. Not to mention some great cards I've gotten from their packs.

    Welcome!

Some people on this board like to rip on 1980s wax. The truth is that there are plenty of cards from the 1980s in PSA 10 grade that have good value in the $40 and up range. And at $5 per box they are low risk and fun to open. Certainly better than paying $30 to $100 for ONE pack from the 1970s with pretty much no chance of pulling equal value in cards from the pack.

Welcome aboard. Glad to see another team set collector, even if it is the Tigers! image

My Cardinals team set collection has been so rewarding. Some are very easy to get, while others are impossible. It keeps me busy.

  • Thanks for the welcome, guys! It looks like that package of '86 Topps won't be here until Tuesday per UPS tracking, but that's alright. I'll get the scans of the potential PSA submissions together this weekend and post them to see what you guys think.

I love the 88 Topps design, their lime little magzine covers. I am actually collecting 1989 Upper Deck in PSA 10, can get them fairly cheap. Welcome to the boards fellow Tigers fan!!

I left as well and really have not jumped back in. The burn from collecting still kind of hurts.
