1916 Buffalo Nickel Doubled Die

I was recently looking through a magazine price guide and saw a variety for a 1916 doubled die buffalo nickel. Can anyone give me a link to pictures of die diagnostics or describe the basic markers to me?

any help would be appreciated

It is a very obvious, dramatic DD, and it is also very scarce. Good luck in your search!

It's one of the king of 20th Cen varieties but you have next to a 0% chance of cherry picking one that has any date left. There are a couple out there to be found with just the feathers remaining of the doubling. On a nice one there is quite a bit of subtle doubling like the eye and hair and chin.

Go to Stacks auctions, the current auction has one coming up. Auction lot #2572 with environmental damage, and still a great find, and probably still out of the budget. David Lange's Buffalo book has plenty of information also.

thanks everyone for the help. I appreciate the links.

This coin was found in the wall of a 1920s mansion in Chicago that my brother-in-law owns. He found a few coins over the years as he tore out walls and asked me to check them out for him. I saw the 1916 nickel and decided to ask. It's a shame, because the coin has AU details. It has a burn looking mark on most of the obverse. This coin shows no sign of doubling. The date is full and clearly not doubled.

    thanks again for the help

  • Ah heck, the bid on the one on the link is only $2. Do I hear $3?

It actually has a stronger spread than the 1955/55 Lincoln but doesn't present as dramatic appearance because it's a different Class of doubling. I've tried to cherry one for almost 35 years with no luck but I know of two that have been cherried off ebay-one a damaged Fine and one, amazingly, in AU58 or MS a few years ago. The first reference I've been able to find for the variety was from a 1962 issue of "Numismatic Scrapbook" magazine. It was also pictured in Spadone's books from the early '60s but the image therein was so badly re-touched that many (myself included) thought it was not a legitimate d die. It became a widely recognized variety when it first appeared in a 1976 issue of the "Greysheet."

The coin that Commoncents linked from CoinFacts looks like an absolutely amazing example. image
