Metal flow from a tired old die. Lost the edge detail or the detail by the rim.
    Sure does look weird, 'eh?

Thanks everyone! So, who would buy something like this? Not someone that is putting together a nice set of Merc Dimes and not someone that is putting together a nice mint set for that year...and besides the clash it really isn't an error is it? Would error collectors be after this one? Just wondering. Thanks!

I agree, die errosion on mint mark and clash die on obverse around face. It's neat, but not 2K+ neat.

There is a 1945 with even more clash in the dime book called the leaf variety. I would like to have it for the right price. image

That is a cool coin with the die clash!

But who would go after such a thing...error collectors? I doubt a set builder would.

I doubt any error collector would chase this just for the clash dies.

As far as the Merc itself I personally wouldn't even be interested at MS63 as thats ventured far to many times into the dipping jar.

I agree, BS, I wouldn't touch it for the grade on holder or a regular set even at the correct grade.

It's strictly a variety coin......to me anyway and would have to be cheap.

You know some people just buy the numbers. And some people buy those white coins thinking they are better than NT or coins with skin. When I first started with the coins I thought blast white was the only way to go. Since then I have learned to appreciate coins that haven't been messed with. There are simply too many dipped out coins.

My MS63 looks better, but the clash is still cool.

The die clash isn't that heavy but it was struck from a very late die state die that should have been retired long before this coin was struck from it. Also, it was probably dipped. I don't see "an expensive error".

Please forgive the roughness of my overlay comparison. I did it quickly while doing a couple other things.

It's all relative I guess. Based on the current bid and what this coin normally sells for at this grade level...I would call it expensive. I realize based on what some people have said about the coin being dipped out and only being worth a few hundred dollars "to them" they clearly will not be getting this coin due to where it has been bid up to already. Not only can individuals place a value on a coin but so can the market place by having an auction and it getting bid up. Considering it is already at the couple grand level, I'm not sure I would call this a cheap error.

They might only "pay" a few hundred for it but I'd bet even money that none of them would "sell" it for hundreds. I don;t think they say it was a dipped out wonder either.

For whatever reason, a couple of folks out there are bidding PCGS money for the coin and it's not the error folks. I can only assume they know what they are doing.
One thing for certain though, it does have Full Bands and at that grade level, even with the clash, worn die and suggested "over dipping", it's bid is inline with the assigned grade.
