Greedy POS rips off active military member ATS.

Unbelievable, and then to brag about it. I sure hope this is a joke.

"Right place at the right time..
Was paying off a loan for a recent Roof Replacement on my home last week at my wife's Credit Union when leaving I heard this weird clinking/clanging and noticed a young Military Pilot trying to cash in his bags of coins in the coin counter.
The machine for some reason wouldn't take his coins.. I told him did he have any Half dollars and he told me yes, also Silver dollars.
Well, I then asked him how much did he think he had and I would buy them from him since it was near closing and this dude seemed peed off because the machine wouldn't take them and we agreed. I took a chance without seeing what he had and took his word on the amount.
What happened next was very fulfilling with joy.. I hit the Morgan, Peace dollar jackpot. I will only offer this. 5 figure book values and upper 4 figure Silver Melt value.
Also, had many Walkers and Franklins with numerous Silver% Kens.
Rare CC Morgans and Peace dollars in Vf/Au condition, along with a bunch of Slider Walkers and Franklins. I also had many Silver Canadian quarters in the hooch..
Investment was $349.. New coins/Silver to my collection.. PRICELESS!!!!.
Lastly, I never knew that Military credit unions were fee free on coin machines and didn't know the machines don't take anything larger than Quarters.
I hope he didn't cash in his grand dads coin collection.. I am still shocked that a educated Aviator didn't understand the value of these coins and am sick that I didn't have a chance at the other bags of coins he did get through the coin counter."

Makes me wonder about the legitimacy of the story.
<< <i>He said he didn't look in the bag and took a chance, if that is true how did he rip anyone off? Would it have been better for the pilot to take them to the counter and change them at face? I am not sure I believe any of the story but I also don't see any malicious intent? >>
I agree. He was sitting at a CoinStar machine exchanging them for face value. I certainly wouldn't call it a rip off, or the guy a POS.

C'mon, are you that niave? He didn't looke in the bag? But heard the wierd sound of large silver clanking and clinking in the coin counter?
While I don't necessarily support what that guy did, the military guy was no worse off than if he had just run the money through the counter. I'd rather have at least one private individual benefit from that find rather than the bank. If he had offered the military guy $5,000 for the silver he probably would have been spooked and left.
<< <i>Didn't take advantage of him. Just because you're a service member doesn't excuse you for being an idiot. >>
I agree, my kid is a Marine and I still can't get behind the OP on this one.

Ugh.
I'm just curious as to what the opinion of this buyer would be if he hadn't purchased from a military member? Is it really much different than buying silver at face from the bank because some unknowing poor soul just deposited it at face and the teller has to sell it at face? While I don't agree with the poster's actions I think he was bragging on the "find" and not on the taking advantage of someone. Is it possible that the "find" is the same thing as taking advantage of someone? We all are proud of our "finds" and because the seller was a military member in this case are we to think of it differently? If buyer had found the same deal at a flea market would he be guilty of taking advantage of someone? I'm not here to defend his actions, it just brings up the routine moral delima in collectible buying - "where does one draw the line between scoring a good deal and taking advantage of someone?" Is it the amount paid vs. real value or is a matter of who the seller is?

I agree with the poster that said that being a serviceman doesn't excuse you for being an idiot.
But I have strong doubts about the veracity of the story in the first place.
And what does "ATS" mean?
I have met some real mook pilots in my day, Anglico Kids come to mind when they dropped a J-DAM 30 yards from me, only 270 yards off the target. F=18 Super Hornet+slow pilot+technology=disaster and shrapnel in my back and neck.

He did not say anything about "large silver clanking and clinging" but said " I heard this weird clinking/clanging".
If the young man was changing them in at face value anyway, whats the problem?

Sounds like a distinct possibility to me.
I recently purchased a large bag of Kennedy's from the bank at face value that yeilded 10 full rolls of silver coins. When I asked the teller, she stated that she had advised the depositor to pull out the silver since it had value but the depositor didn;t really care. She just wanted to get rid of the coins.
I've read on these forums of folks getting full rolls of Morgan Dollars at the Bank at face value, deposited by folks who either didn't know or didn't care. They just wanted to get rid of the coins.
Some people are just like that.

Lay persons should be informed of what they have. You can offer less than it is worth, but they should realize that this is so. The guys on Pawn Stars may be offering cheap, but they are honest about it.
Active military deserve better treatment than average for reasons that are self-evident.
Coin dealers are professionals with an obligation to know their facts. Still, I will not take advantage of blatent errors such as adding up totals wrong or coins that obviously were put in the wrong bucket. Cherry-picking obscure varieties is fair game, as long as doing so is not blocking other people from being able to give the dealer business.
he went through the vacuum cleaner bag at the bank.
Edit to add, I don't believe this new "story" for a second. Now the "man of means" and the vacuum cleaner business I do believe.
This is total fiction.

The Pawn Stars guys start low but then negotiate upwards with a knowledgeable seller.
The real slime ball is the guy in Detroit on Hard Core Pawn.
Not only does he pay pennies on the dollar and take cruel advantage of desperate, uninformed sellers but then brags about it afterward.

I had a long rant that I'll forgo, and just agree with the bold part in scottgardener's statement. I do hope the story is BS, but for some reason, I doubt it is.

<< <i>How anyone could be so stupid to sell that at face value. You would have to be from another planet not to know there was numistmatic value there. If not that, then at least the silver value.

You could not be any more incorrect with your earlier statement.
I am the owner/operator of Key Largo Rare Coins, Recently there was a full page article written in the local paper about my buisness. After the article was printed it then made front page of another paper. Since the article came out I get dozens of phone calls from people all over my area wanting to know the value of old coins they have. Most of the people have no idea of value and most also do not know anything about silver coins and the silver value. I talk to dozens of people who dont even know what the price of silver is let alone that certian coins contain silver. Ive also done several appraisals on coin collections since the article and appraised collections any where from 1000.00 to over 500,000 all from people who had no idea what they had an had know idea there was any real value. Most people outside of the numismatic community have simply no idea that single coins have sold in excess of one million dollars, and that there can be some real money in coins. Its not that people are stupid, there are simply people out there that are not a part of the numismatic community and do not know other people involved in the community.

If he didn't do it, then, just as before, his postings are full of crap and he doesn't understand how to relate to normal, intelligent, people.
If it is true, and he went into it expecting a bonanza, which is how I read his own words, then he is not only mentally lacking, but also morally bankrupt; imho.
