Lucky penny-1929-Harley Davidson-Post yours

rec78rec78 Posts: 5,741 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hi, Does anyone collect lucky pennies? I have had this one for many years because i thought it was kinda neat. It has a BU 1929 lincoln cent in it and a Harley Davidson advertisment. I have no idea what it is worth. Just a fun thing. I do not collect these- I have a few others (maybe2) but they are just run of the mill. imageimage

Wow, that one is super neat because it has such a famous brand name on it, and it looks as though the cent still has quite a bit of mint luster. Like you, I'd have no idea on how to put a monetary value on such a thing. Maybe the others you have are "run of the mill", but this piece certainly is not. It might or might not be super valuable, but it is definitely supercool. And Harley Davidson collectors might be almost as avid over it as numismatists.

I don't have any of these. I had one of those "neutron irradiated" dimes, once. I did dig up an "encased penny" like this once, while detecting in a local park. But the coin inside was a Canadian large cent dated 1914. The aluminum (zinc?) outer ring of the encasement crumbled away in my hand, having totally corroded in the ground. I'll never know what it said. The coin ain't bad, though. It has XF-ish details.

Oh- I dug this one, too.

    And this one.

Both were in metal detecting "hotspots" where I found multiple other goodies, so you might say they did indeed bring me luck.

LordM----my dad dug one of those "good luck" tokens while living out in the middle of South Dakota back in the 90's. His appears to be made of copper. Perhaps his just spent more time in the ground than yours as it appears to be similar in color to older nickels that we have dug...or maybe it had silver colored plating that has eroded off.

I gave away one over the past week to a young kid in the shop with his grandpa. It was a Metz Beer type. It was like contributing to the delinquency of a minor, almost. It cost me !

Nice cents! Those are pretty cool. The Harley is a keeper. Do you know when it was made?

Charmy, why does the photo of the first '01 IHC say "German"? image

    very cool stuff!

i find it intresting that the horseshoes are oriented open end down, which causes the luck to run out...

I'd say Harley is worth $25-50. It is generic but quite nice condition. If from a specific state or city then much higher.

No I have no idea-But my best guess is 1929-1930 because of the condition of the coin.

    Nice collection there Penny Lady.

I wonder when they started to produce these. Those are the earliest I have seen.

Lordmarcovan-I found 2 of those green river whiskey tokens myself while metal detecting - As for the one with the German symbol (swasticka - Ok i don't know how to spell it) - It is probably pre-WWII, as it used to be a good luck symbol before Hitler ruined it.

I believe they were first made in the late 1890's, either 1898 or 1899. Encasements from the west coast are a little more expensive as they seem to be more rare, especially encasements from Alaska. Also, some of the encasements with different shapes such as teddy bears are more rare. Encasements such as the OP's can sell for more because of the popularity of the subject matter on the encasement, but the condition of the coin, of course, will determine value as well.
