Thoughts on Mercury toning

This picture was done on a scanner (my apologies), so the luster doesn't come through at all (and it is lustrous), but just curious if the Merc crowd finds this type of "splotchy" red/orange/green toning attractive. For those in the know, is this end-roll toning or album toning? Thanks.

I do not find the coin attractive and IMO should carry no premium. Not sure on what type of toning it might possibly be due to the image.

If that coin is in an older NGC or ANACS holder, then at least part of the color may have been caused by the holder itself. Otherwise, that toning could have come about any number of ways including an album or roll end.

That looks like normal toning caused by multiple factors. Normal for a silver coin of some age and perhaps slight circulation along with 'home storage." It is "crusty" IMHO. Put that toning on a Proof (which tone differently) and I will like it even more.

I know the type of color that coin has.

The picture is cruddy but I can guarantee that it's a pretty coin in hand.

Album toning is typically concentric and starts evenly around the outer ring. Typically referred to as "target" toning. At least that has been my experience. image

Image is really tiny, but it looks attractive for a widget.

Yes, me too. I had a wonderful Pr like this with these colors but there was a pinhole in the worst spot. Coin came from Boca Raton and is probably on eBay again..

    Hi,

here is a good example of the gulf often between scanning/photography and actual appearances. The glossy brown coin on the dealers site looked like it had potential so I dug around auction results. The recent image on the left was online from the dealer, the image on the right was in an old Goldberg auction catalog. The coin did indeed look like I had suspected in hand - just like the Goldberg photo. I was very happy. 1906 Benson Proof 63. At the time there were about 35 slabbed.

Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

That type of toning is usually caused by some type of paper contact. Need a pic of the reverse to try and come to a conclusion as to what toned it. If the luster is there im sure it looks nice in hand.

You should use auto fix on photobucket.
