At what grade does one accept hairlines as typical ?
Continually working on my Type Set, and have even upgraded some earlier acquisitions. Still, it seems some of the high AU coins I've purchased (and returned) appear to have been cleaned, as the majority show hairlines under about 7x magnification.
Am I being too picky? I want to build a nice set, but it seems the only way to beat the system is to purchase MS coins from reliable TPG's... that can get a little pricey. Now, I don't MIND pricey, necessarily, if it's fair, and reasonable for the grade.
I started out wanting to build a nice AU set, but many MS coins have found their way in, mostly because I was willing to spend the money to acquire them (I detect a pattern here...)
Your thoughts?

I believe they come in many grades and this is typical. Now, whether you accept this typical is up to you and it seems like you're not. Good for you!
Many/most old classic coins have been cleaned in one form or another. But if you hang tough you can find nice ones that haven't. Some sellers/dealers might say too picky. If they do I would just move on. Find a Dealer that knows how "picky" you are and build a relationship. But always have your eyes wide open because they might just throw a barker at you and I just send it back as fast as I can get it out of here.
I try not to have a coin sent to me if I have any doubt whatsoever. As I don't like returning coins, and I don't want the Dealers to think I'm picky
It takes longer, of course, to find the right coin, but that's what the hunt is all about... isn't it?
