Another 1901 Straits 50c I need your opinion on...

I need the 1901 Straits Settlements 50c piece for my daughter's collection. It's a tough coin.

The trouble is, because it's a tough coin, and biggish and silver and from Asia, it's been a popular target of Chinese counterfeiters.

This one looks like it might be real (albeit not the finest example in the world- but modestly acceptable, maybe).

Then again, with those pictures, who knows?

The last one that came up within my pricerange, y'all told me to pass on, not because it was fake, but because it was substandard. So I passed. This one ain't fantastic, either, but I could live with it until a better one came along. (TOO much better and I wouldn't be able to afford it, though, probably). I could conceivably buy this one if it didn't take off too far beyond the start price.

So... what do you think? Should I bid? Ask the seller for better pix? Or just pass again, and wait until another one comes up? (Who knows how long that will be.)

I would ask for a better picture

In all fairness, the coin has the crusty look that would lead me to believe it circulated in there

No harm in asking for a better image.

    My thoughts exactly.

Thank you. I shall ask the seller for a bigger and/or better picture, then.

I hope that he didn't. No shame in saying the truth: the coin was affordable but truly ugly.

Maybe a dip could enhance its looks, as well as its wear, but we're entering dangerous territory with this kind of thinking.

You know the old adage - 'Never buy a coin you don't like the look of, because you probably never will'. A good one to remember unless you intend to flip it...

Yes, I did. I put in a (modest) esnipe, and lost. I'm not lamenting too much. Another will come along.

In fact, another has, and a nice one- in an ANACS AU58 holder- but I'll never be able to afford that one. (I think the BIN is something like $1,850.00.)
