Some German material (and others) from Chicago

American Numismatic Association World's Fair of Money, Chicago, 2011
Here's a new purchase (and a few others) from the recent ANA show.
A huge 25th-anniversary German commemorative medal by W. Meyer, Stuttgart.
It celebrates the German victories in the Franco-Prussian War, which led to the
formation of the Second Empire. (Dual-dated 1870 - 1895)

The portraits are of Kaiser Wilhelm II (in the center) surrounded by his
royal/imperial predecessors, Wilhelm I and Friedrich III. The other gentlemen
are the famed German commander Von Moltke, and chancellor Otto von Bismarck.
My only complain about the obverse is that the Kaiser's nose is the highest part
of the design, so the touch of wear gives him the appearance of a helmeted
W.C. Fields!
Here’s the reverse, with a depiction of Germania triumphant, holding aloft the new
German imperial crown (a crown that was designed but never crafted, but that’s another
story):

By the way, please forgive my primitive imagery; my photography skills are those of
an untrained animal, so I scanned these medals.
Here’s a neat medal I won as a door-prize raffle at the CONECA banquet (held at
Gibson’s, right across from the Stephens Convention Center --- highly recommended!).

It’s a triple-struck Stanley Cup medal from 1997. Pretty cool! Thank you to
CONECA for the great prize, as well as the camaraderie of that evening.
Here’s the reverse:

From the Austrian Mint comes this richly detailed 10-euros silver piece from their
series on tales and legends of Austria. This one features the destruction of the
Klagenfurt lindwurm, a dragon that disrupted trade and killed livestock and humans
in the Carinthian region (southern Austria). The men who finally defeated the dragon
were given farmland and other property by the duke, and locals were able to
drain the surrounding swamps that had sheltered the dragon, and build the town
of Klagenfurt.
