Show Reports vs. Market Reports

Show reports can be very interesting when they reveal details about people - collectors, dealers, movers, shakers - in the hobby.
Market reports, on the other hand...if I'm an average, middle-class collector, why should I care?
Let's see...
High dollar coins continue to sell well to those who can afford them. I can't.
Gold is selling well. No kidding?
Coins that have been off the market for many years garner significant interest on the boarse floor. OK, got it. Gotta hang on to my coins for a while.
What's hot and what's not? Depends on your perspective and your niche and may be quite different than a week ago or next week. Ho-hum.

<< <i>A few years ago I changed the way I write show reports to take out the details about the folks I meet up with because I had received a number of private messages from other board members telling me they thought it was useless fluff. >>
And then on the other hand people come up to Charmy asking to be in the report.
There is no perfect report as we all want to hear something different. I have not seen my series mentioned in a report in a long time so for me I have not found much substance relevant to me in a while.

That's funny, because I get the complete opposite! I think the people (both collectors and dealers) you meet and get to know at coin shows are just as important as hunting for the coins you want/need, both are what make attending coin shows rewarding.

Yes, I agree with what both you and Todd are writing and perhaps some of the board culture has changed since 2006 or 2007 and now those details would be more welcome. I see nothing wrong at all with your reports, by the way, and just view mine as a different way of conveying information from a similar experience.

I stopped writing up my coin club reports, because virtually no one responded to the posts and they took some time to type up. A few lurkers did say they did read them, but that is true of every post on this very active coin forum.
I enjoy reading show reports, market reports, and if anyone ever posts them, coin club meeting reports. All tend to be interesting to me.
Nonetheless, my reports tend to be about my personal observations, interactions, and happenstances. In other words, I try to give people an idea of what the show was like as if the reader was walking in my shoes (not his/her own). I deal in a very narrow segment of the market and do not presume that what I see and hear has any bearing on anyone else or their niche.
While I am not shy about revealing details overheard by unnamed dealers as an anonymous table visitor (which are often priceless), I never reveal anecdotes told to me in confidence or any that might jeopardize the status of someone I personally know. When in doubt, I leave it out.
a real bear I never listen to them. Who else but a real bear would double space
double spaceand make Christmas Tree margins, bigger at the bottom then the top?

Have you read the disclaimer of the market report I think you are referring too? If so why make this post?
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.
<< <i>Have you read the disclaimer of the market report I think you are referring too? If so why make this post? >>
I made the post because it seems to me that "market" reports are of minimal value to middle class collectors...and I think middle class collectors are in the majority.
We spend a lot of time on this forum discussing market reports, all of which say essentially the same thing. We spend comparatively little time discussing practical information that is useful for those middle class collectors.
(Really, I made the post because I wanted to get you spun up.)

What kind of practical information do you think comparatively little time is discussed?
Give me some examples please.
Coins are coins.......dealers deal what they deal in and collectors collect what they collect.
Some buy and sell more expensive coins and others less expensive coins
Its about having fun isn't it?
And why do YOU have to bring the discsussion down to a social classes......?
Edit to say: I don't think you have read the disclaimer in the market report you referred too.....

OK, how about an analysis of auction records for specific coins or coins in the same grade/series with a discussion of why the coins brought more or less than before?
Or, how to identify a coin that represents a good value and how this applies to various price points?
Or, how to tell when a coin has been cleaned or puttied or waxed or otherwise messed with when you only have an online image to go by?
Or, how to tell when a coin has been cleaned and has retoned?
I'm sure you could come up with a few more...

Yes, of course. I'm having fun. Aren't you?
And why do YOU have to bring the discsussion down to a social classes......?
Huh? Why not me? It's my thread topic.
Edit to say: I don't think you have read the disclaimer in the market report you referred too.....
I don't think you have any idea what market report I had in mind when I posted this thread. I didn't refer to any.
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
<< <i>I read all market and show reports. Some I enjoy more then others. MJ >>
I used to read all of them. Now I only read a couple with any regularity.

All those topics have been discussed and dealers are available to discuss them with you in person if you wish.
I think I do have in mind what market report you are referring too.....you gave that away in your OP....
Its old MFC....

What is old MFC?
Seriously, I don't know who you mean.
We can have a great ANA show within a greater quiet market or vice-versa.
<< <i>We can have a great ANA show within a greater quiet market... >>
I did not go to the ANA show, but from what I've read, that seems like what we had.
<< <i>Its all a matter of personal taste. I love the CRO+Legend reports. >>
Agree that there are some great reports out there, but in my mind (and I am a dealer who writes one after every show) CRO Road Report is the best read out there!
