White Plains today: Staub, Probstein and more

Highlight 1: meeting my first "favorite player ever" -- Rusty Staub.

When I was 8, I even wrote him a letter asking for an auto picture. And today, I brought that pic along to show him -- see scan below.

I had Rusty sign a ball that read: I joined Ty Cobb. Only players to hit a HR in teens and 40s.

YES, I know Gary Sheffield joined that exclusive club (they are the only 3 players to do it) and if I ever spot a Sheff signing, I'll have him sign this ball.

Highlight 2: meeting Probstein123.
I think I waited just as long to get Staub auto. Rick clearly knows what he's doing, because there was a steady streaming of customers.

Highlight 3/4: random pick ups.

3. Some raw fillers for my childhood sets of the 70s and
4.found a booth that was selling FULL sets for $2, yes 2-bucks. Bought a 1987 topps set, fleer 1988 set and fleer tin update for a whopping $6 total.

Gregg, Great report. How was the traffic at the show? Dealers happy? complaining? Nice score on the three sets for $6. When I was a kid, I would have cut my left arm off for that 87 Fleer Update Tin set. It had McGwire in it!

I got there after 1pm, and for the most part it was dead. One dealer said the other days were better - but I've heard those exact same words in the past.
I'd be curious what Probstein's take was, since he was there multiple days.
And again, I live so close (6-7 miles), that I never have to say it wasn't worth the trouble.

I was there ( guy with Sosa jersey and Cubs hat ) and met Ernie - surprisingly as he was taking a break and going to the bathroom. He goes " there's a good jersey!". And I told him hello and that I've wanted to meet him forever. Then we chatted when he signed ( picture to follow )- great guy, definitely amazing he's still so active. I was actually happy with the show. Bought some 48 Bowman for a set I'm working on - then stopped by the memory lane booth, told them I've bought from them in the past and he brought out a Yankee world series ring and let my son wear it! Pretty cool. I think it was the perfect show for the two of us, we had a blast!

  • traffic was strong, but was mostly an auto crowd....not swarms of high end set builders or sophisticated memorabilia buyers...
jsa , sgc, and psa looked like they were packed....
