MS 62-63 SLABBED cap and rays 8 reales....

Thats unusual for him but he acknowledged he might do better from a marketing standpoint.

  • Mike also had a few stacks of MS60 graded Pillar 8's. I wound up purchasing two AU examples for a fellow dealer. I also contemplated a 2 Escudo 1785 from Bolivia but decided to hold off for a higher graded piece.

When silver hit $30 (and then higher), I got real serious about cleaning out all the loose bits of silver lying around the office.

With the current booming market in Cap & Rays 8 Reales, I imagine that Mike may be doing the same with those coins.

I did not....nor did I ask what he thought of the grades he received.

I have always purchased raw coins from him in the past.......so seeing so many slabs in his case was surprising.

It seems that he is likely following auction results

Smart move to capitalize on a hot market.
  • Mike told me that the C&R 8's are going to China in droves!

4 out of the last 5 slabbed C&R's I sold last month went to buyers in China.

I saw those slabbed 8Rs in his case and we joked about it.

Serious question though. It has always been said that coins sold into Japan would never come back out of Japan. I do not know the truth to that statement. Do you think the (non-Chinese) coins sold into China will ever come back to North America? At some point, there will be no high-grade 8Rs left in North America.... image

I just sold a nice 1796 MO FF 8 Reales and I had two buyers from China contacting me to purchase the item. I was worried about shipping to China so I declined. I could have probably got more then eh?

They are sending back our $ in exchange for Reales? Well, they again will get value for their exchange. our worthless dollars for treasures.

He has given in to the plastic. It will be interesting to see what the populations will look like given the influx of raw material sent in seeking the coveted gem plus grades. It will only be a matter of time before the dealers will start the games of looking for 62 and 63 graded coins for those that have a shot at a grade increase from a resubmit. Prices for 62 through 66 have stablized somewhat, providing a scale of risk and reward for regrades.

I have to admit, I'm torn between selling the high grade stuff or keeping them for fear that we will not see them return to the market for a very long time.

Common date high grades- and there were hoards of certain dates that surfaced in high grade- can only maintain a loftly price if they continue to leave North America or enough type collectors more concerned with the plastic than the coin seek these.

The better play is not condition rarity but real rarity and real rarity has not been as well defined as certain dates have an MS population that is close to extinct. This series has be so neglected for so long and it seems that the real bull market for these still has legs
