$2M diamond heist on LA street, no arrests made

Substitute coins for diamonds people. Be careful out there. Learn how to drive evasively if you are going to drive with your collection or a lot of money. Do NOT put your briefcase on the passenger seat. Stop 2 exits before the one you usually take, pull over by the side of the road and just observe. The thief has to stop with you or keep going. Stay alert. There's a time for fun and there's a time to realize it's survival time. Or not.

$2M diamond heist on LA street, no arrests made

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Masked men in dark clothing stopped a jewelry merchant's car, beat him and stole $2 million worth of diamonds during a brazen Los Angeles street heist, police said Friday.
The merchant appears to have been targeted by professional thieves, police Lt. Alan Hamilton said. No arrests have been made.

"This isn't unusual," Hamilton said, noting there are large jewelry thefts each week in Southern California. "It's usually South American nationals who are very organized and professional."

The victim told investigators he was driving down a well-lighted North Hollywood street about 10:10 p.m. Thursday when his car was blocked by two vehicles. and five to six men jumped out.

The men ran up to the merchant's car and smashed a window while struggling for the backpack containing the diamonds. The attackers got back in their vehicles and fled.

I wonder if the merchant from whom the $2,000,000.00 in diamonds were taken is one of those diamond merchant "Who guarantee's they will appraise for double" (the sale price).

When I bought my wife's engagement ring in LA's diamond district many years ago, the seller gave me a written guarantee that the diamond I bought would "appraise for double". I always wondered what this guarantee meant. Does it have any substance behind it or is it nothing more than marketing?

A lot of people think "appraisal value" means that's what they would collect from insurance in the event of loss. Not so. Insurance pays replacement cost for equal quality, and since diamonds are easily available at less-than-retail prices (like in a diamond district image ), the reimbursement can be much less than appraisal value.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Undoubtedly, blood diamonds. No loss here other than the life of those who mine these in Africa.
