2001 $25 Gold Eagle Error?? Please Help!

I just received two 2001 $25 gold eagles from PCGS that I thought would easily grade MS69. Well they both came back as MS69 as expected, but one came back as MS69 Mint Error, Stk w/Unfinished Proof Die. Has anyone else seen this type of error before?

  • Frank,

This happened in 1999, when some of the MS coins got a mintmark, and this was the error designation. The mintmark comes from the Proof obverse die. In the 1999 case, they were struck with dies that had been created, but not polished, giving the MS coins the mintmark.

I believe you have the highly-coveted "PCGS labelling error". image But, look for a W mintmark below that 2001 just in case.

Here's some more info for you.
  • Tulving is advertising a version of the same error (I think) in the 1999 $5 GE MS69 for $399 each.
  • This would be the first one I have heard about for the $25 eagles. Is there a "W" mint mark on the coin? If not it is probably just a label ing errorlike Supercoin mentioned. Let us know. In either case it would make for a nice story.

  • Thanks for all the replies. No "W" mintmark on this coin. Too bad it would have made for a nice find!

I did call PCGS and gave them an earful. This is the second time I've had a problem with coins labels being wrong in the last two months.

Took a closer look at the coin in Photoshop....image isn't too clear blown up but I don't see a "W"...my guess is labeling error.

Or you could put it on eBay with "I don't know anything about coins but my rich uncle died and gave me this". Your slightly blurry photo will serve nicely. image
  • Or I could use "My poor Harold who died and this is all he left me...." Should be good for a few hundred!
