Can PCGS add benefits without detracting from the bottom line?
I, as most of you know, am a coin man. However, occasionally I come across currency in collections.
Most of you that buy collections know what I'm talking about. Every now and again I get something
in the currency line that is actually worth grading.
As a Collectors Club Member I cannot submit currency for grading. How silly is that? So, I just don't
grade the paper and sell as is.
I think that our host ought to allow me, and you, to get your paper graded without joining another club
such as the Currency Collectors Club. After all we are all part of PCGS.
They just lose my currency grading dollars.
Oh well.

PCGS Currency is no longer owned by Collectors Universe and hasn't been since 2009. We are still operated, and now 100% owned, by the same management team as when we were part of CU, and most of the same graders are still on staff (although we've doubled our grading staff in the last three years). Not much else has changed besides our ownership and location, other than losing the headaches of being a division of a publicly held company.
Since we are a separate entity, however, we do require a different Collectors Club membership. The gold and platinum Currency CC memberships come with grading vouchers, so they are usually a pretty good deal versus normal submission fees. The details can be found here: PCGS Currency Collectors Club
As for the licensing agreement with Collectors Universe regarding the PCGS Currency name, the copy of the paperwork that I have indicates that the agreement was for 10 years, not three. I suspect that CU will end up making plenty enough on the royalty fees that they won't mind an extension, but that decision is still a long way down the road and I won't worry about it for a while.
