I am pleased with the results but really thought the first Tyson was going to get a PSA 10. A few really nice grades though.

I will post scans when I recieve them back.

PSA listened and is now grading these the 1986 Panini.

  • Wow D, that's a score!!! Big money grip!

    Way to go!!!

The McEnroe and Bird will bring some great interest if you sell. The Tyson's are a $400 plus card.

    Is that two boxes worth?

I only bought the one box. I had an extra Tyson I had purchased raw and then a few other items I wanted graded.

I needed the Ivan Koloff to finish my sixth graded 1982 Wrestling All Stars A set. I also got two of the second year Tyson graded and I now have three of those in PSA 9.

Nice sub. I have no idea how these basketball will sell. They should do well I think. I don't think the tennis will bring that much. The mcenroe and conners aren't rookies... And tennis cards in general sell for peanuts. Interesting to see that psa corrected the slab on the tysons. Congrats on the 9. Is there a ff fleer glossy error or only the black box corrected?

There is just the corrected Billy Ripken. I just subbed it for the heck of it as it was nice and the others I have were very off centered.

I am really at a loss of what to think the Panini stuff could bring. On one hand I could see the basketball doing really well on the other it could flop.

The thing I am most pleased about it I did a good job of selecting what I submitted. I knew the Tyson that got the PSA 8 was not Mint but any Tyson is worth subbing and the Ivan Koloff I was also aware would not bring a mint grade but as stated before I did it to finish my 6th set.

Nice sub!! It is very interesting that PSA now views this set as 1986. I would have to believe that this will increase the value in the 1986 Question of Sport Tyson's since this is also now a fist year "rookie" card. I know it has been discussed before, but has anyone figured out which card was actually distributed first?

I wrote this on Navarro's thread a few weeks ago

The debate as to which is the actual Rookie card is going to be tuff to solve. The market clearly is much more favorable to the Panini sticker and I think this will continue. The real question is which came first?

    Let's examine this.

The board game from the BBC in England came out in 1986 and there are 1200 cards in the set with six different versions. I have looked and the trouble is there is no checklists that I can find that tell you which of the board games the Tyson is in. At first glance is seems obvious which one he is in until I saw an open box with boxing figures on the board game and none of them pictured on the cover. It will take trial and error to figure it out.

The box simply says copyright 1986 and the card is clearly a picture of him fighting Mitch Green. This fight took place in Madison Square Garden May 20, 1986. This was his first time fighting in MSG.

    Tyson vs Green Part 1

What is interesting is the picture on the Panini card is him giving an interview with a MSG microphone and without being able to see the post fight interview I can't tell if it took place the same night. Many of his clips on Youtube do not show post fight interviews and perhaps at a later date we can uncover the interview in the picture.

When you search for Panini in the United Kingdom all of sticker albums with the foil cards say 1987. The foil card I have has an English back to it and once I get my box from the Italian version I will be able to tell if there are foil cards in that verson. My hunch is the English version came out at a later date in the United Kingdom and that the Italian Panini is the first version.

The back of the Italian version reads much different then the English version. It is as follows.

The magnificent album for the collection of these figurines and for sale at newsstands and stationery to price propaganda of L. 500. Those who do not find may require sending L. 500 stamps: editions Panini

I used a website to translate it.

The back of the English version he is 25-0 and that fight took place on July 26, 1986 against Marvis Frazier.

With the fights taking place so close to each other and no release dates in months I think the effidence is not conclusive either way. Mike Tyson's first fight in Madison Square Garden was the fight on the Question of Sport and it is possible the picture on the Panini came from the exact same fight. If many of the fights were picked up by MSG network his 25th fight took place in New York which was his most current from the back of the English version.

I really think it is going to be tuff to actually tell and either way both are great cards but I suspect the Panini will be declared his true rookie card either way and as stated before command the most money.

Here are the recent pick ups from boxing treasures. This card is going to be tough with the green back from chipping and some green in the white from the cards on top.

First of all great info dpeck.. But i dont think we need to get so specific about when the cards were produced. For the major sports we usually accept any card produced during his rookie year... Ie barry sanders 89 score and 89 pro set are both his rookie but the score card is worth more. I think this is the same situation for Tyson. I think the panini will be considered his key rookie for a few reasons. 1 it is graded by all major grading companies 2 panini is still a relevant card company 3 there are several other key boxing rookies in the panini sticker sets from 1966-88. That being said I think the qos card has some upside. I used to lump this card with the other worthless unlicensed Tyson cards from the late 80s but since bgs and sgc both slab it I think it gives the card more legitimacy. I think the panini will be the key rookie but I also think the spread between the 2 cards will narrow.

The Billy Ripken Glossy has only been subbed a total of six times now. This seems very surprising to me.

    PM sent.

The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Sorry for the old thread bump... but I was looking for info on how to tell if a pack is the italian version or UK version? Not looking to buy a box but would like a pack or 2 just to have for an unopened collection. Also, does anyone know if psa will slab any of the panini packs?

I just found these pics on EBAY and my best guess is that you can tell by who is on the pack from the series. Here are two different photos of Maradona featured on the packs and box. The first picture is from an 86 Italian box and what the packs look like. The second photo is from the 1987 UK version. I also saw that with the 87 UK boxes pictures that show other packs and there was a white guy with a mustache that I don't recognize from the 86 Italian boxes I broke.

Here is what a graded pack looks like.
