'kat - I'm pretty sure I showed you the grungy cent that looked to have VF detail under the muck.
Just got grades on an economy order - yep 3 of 20: GENUINE
BTW: both orders rec'd 7/15/11 at PCGS, so about a month for grades. Thanks PCGS.

Sigh. I know the feeling. Even when they come back and I look them over very carefully, half the time I can't even figure out what the graders might have objected to. It seems that better than 20% of my submissions get the Genuine treatment for cleaning, while I'm batting better than 95% nailing the grade to within a single point. Is there a book out there somewhere that describes what to look for in order to detect cleaned bronzes? I believe I know the basics, but I must still be missing something.

I would love to see one of those. I've seen pix of one or two PCGS MS67 RD 1871 PEI cents, as I recall. Seeing a full red example of one of the bigger, earlier coppers would be eyecandy, even though I'm only a part-time Greysider.
(PS- hey, your MS example ain't too shabby!)
Even RB examples seem to be few and far between with most of the PCGS pieces residing in Gene's superb custom registry set!
As for the proofs, I've tracked less than 20 examples in PCGS or NGC holders combined but there may be others lurking in NGC's invisible census or still raw. All were designated brown (some bronzed).
