Stumped...which card do I choose

Okay, so to begin, the asinine morality program designed to protect all of our fragile minds from dirty words flagged my post because a certain Milkwaukee player has within his name a crude synonym for the male genitalia. So I've had to self sensor it in order to post the bloody message. Absolutely idiotic.

Now on to the question at hand:

So I've had my eye on a pair of 1952 Topps Joe Adkok that have been on ebay for a while, through Memory Lane. But I'm a bit stumped as to which I should go for. Both are nominally the same grade: NRMT-MT 8, and both are the same price. One is PSA the other is SGC. Now normally I'd grab the PSA, since all my other topps cards are PSAs as I'm going for a registry set, and it's the grader I prefer. However, the SGC graded card is nearly dead centered, while the PSA is a far more typical example of the 52 Adkok, with an alignment shifted upward and to the left. Centering is very important to me. While I'm familiar with SGC, and know they are a good grader, given they have their own proprietary grade standards, this makes me a bit nervous...what's the crossover rate like from SGC to PSA?

Which card would you recommend I go for?

PS: I can't post direct links, since the links have the player's name in them.

Try and catch this one you software program: 0110011001110101011000110110101100100000011110010110111101110101

Anyways, follow this link, and scroll to the bottom for the cards in question: Two Cards

If the sgc is centered I would not worry about it and roll the dice.

Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
  • I personally feel SGC has a higher card standard.

I like the SGC much better with respect to centering.

I have no problem buying an SGC card.

  • Go with SGC. I've found you can crack the cards out and sub to PSA and get 1-2 grades higher. This might be worth the gamble.

SGC ... that card is a BEAUTY! However, I am wondering if it is just the way the pictures were taken or does the one in the PSA holder have brighter colors.

    It's the old :

buy the card = SGC and gamble if you crack or resub

Jim ... $1,400.00 is a lot of money to "buy the holder"! LOL (but also a lot to "crack and resub"!!)

I have to agree with everyone so far. The card in the SCG holder has more eye appeal. As it has been said. Buy the card not the grade or holder its in...
  • The SGC card is nearly dead centered ???

SGC due to it's better T/B centering, L/R look similar although opposite.

    No.
    Good for you.
  • Okay, so I misspoke when I said dead centered, but for those who have made themselves familiar with the 52 Topps, will find that the 347 Adccok is particularly hard to find with decent centering, and this example is quite fine, as far as that card goes.

I was leaning heavily toward the SGC, so this is a nice vote of confidence I'd chosen the right card (though if I do buy it, I'll probably look at crossing it for my registry)
