Monster taler in WAG auction

Holy schnikes.....check out this lot in the Sept 11th WAG auction. It is a 1583 10 taler piece. I would love to see one of these in person at a show some day.

At plus or minus 100mm these are impressive hunks of silver. I guess you didn't want to get into a one-upmanship competition with Julius.

    That's not a thaler- it's a manhole cover! image

  • Love it.

Liked how much PP Weimar stuff there is, might have to consider a bid or 2 if the estimates are anything to go by.
Still thinking of what to put in my signature...

    Brent:

You should have come to CICF. A friend of mine had the Virgil Brand 1620 example of the BW on display and will also have it on display at the ANA this week. BTW, I carried it and a 5 and 3 taler into bourse at CICFimage

Larry - A 10, 5, and 3 taler in the same time? That would be an impressive lineup. Back in the day, that would require some reinforced pockets to carry that kind of hardware.

I would have loved to attend CICF. I should have taken better advantage of the proximity to Chicago when I was back in Cincinnati. The pacific NW makes it had to make these trips now. This great forum keeps me alive in the collecting world.

Very cool. How were these struck, screw press? Being so large you would imagine quite a lot of force would be needed to strike them.
