PCGS--When can we Pedigree the new sets?

I've e-mailed gayle to ask when the new sets can be pedigreed. I'm sure they want to let the rankings settle down, but I hope they don't give too long. I felt led on last year waiting and waiting, and finally being out of the top 5 in the modern MS, and they never did allow that set to be pedigreed.

My opinion is that you should have to wait at least a year before you or anyone should be able to "pedigree" a PCGS registry set. In fact, the only reason someone would want to pedigree is if they plan to hold onto all the coins in their set indefinately. I do not believe having a set with some "unknown" name on the label adds to the set value. There are very few names that really should qualify for pedigrees on the label. I know that if I were looking to buy a slabbed coin, I would be very hesitent to buy the coin with a name on it unless I recognized the name from having read about him in the coin newspapers. JMHO. Steve,
The problem is these sets were formed, what, a year or so ago. They kept saying early 2002 to pedigree. Here we are in April, and the sets are changed. I don't think requiring another year is fair, as most of the top sets moved right across into top places in the new sets. It certainly brings PCGS business, and it's one of their stated benefits to registering your set.

I understand giving people a little time to add newly required coins to their sets. I think if they go more than a month though, it will be too long. Set changes were announced a while back. Although the final contents didn't settle down until recently, the changes regarded keeping coins that were already in the sets. The additionas for the 1950-Present sets have been clear for some time.

With several people below you having only one coin to update into the new set and they all have higher rated sets, I doubt you will be in the top 5 by the time you get your coins mailed in to PCGS. It is going to take some time for the dust to settle and for everyone to add their newly required coins and be 100% complete. I don't think having a Pedigree on coins is going to make them more valuable unless you are one of the top well known collectors of all time. Just my opinion.

    Dennis,
I don't expect to be anywhere near the top five on the 1950-present proof set, but I am hoping to hold #5 on the 1950-present circulation strike type set. Clearly, Bartdog and High Desert will pass me when they get their additional coins into the sets.

I don't expect the Jordan name to be famous in the numismatic community. I plan to hold these coins for a long time, and think it would be nice to get my name on them. I expect most of these coins to pass in my will when I die!

Brian, I have looked at your modern proof and uncirculated type sets and given what you said, I do think you should be allowed to get your name on the labels of the coins if that is what PCGS intends to do. I do not like the name pedigree because it implies something different than what I think you are saying. You have a lovely set which you plan to keep a long time, so you should be able to get your name on the coins. I think this might be a good marketing tool for PCGS. They probably would charge something like $5 similiar to their reholder fee. It should not matter if you are in the top 5 or not, ONLY that you have a completed set. Key thing to remember is it may hurt to have your personal name on the slab when you want to sell. If you plan to hold them for many years, then it would probably be worth it. Good luck, Steveimage

I don't think a pedigree hurts the resell value. Did you guys see the prices Labute got for his coins? Strong!!!! And his set was not complete..... and dropped out of the top five before being auction off! Look at the IH set "Kamauff/Angel Dee's" that set was put up a month ago... now is listed for the Long beach auction. It was put in the Registry to HYPE the up coming auction. I think we will see more of these short term "Flip Sets" put up by dealers and auction house looking of increase the auction prices. The Registry is a profit machine!

  • Hi,
I am new to your forum.
I have been collecting coins since I was seven.
I always liked proof coins and have accumulated many.
I would like to regester a set but was not aware there were restrictions.
    What is the right time.
    Best regards,

    Fast Walker,
Registering and Pedigreeing are two different things. All it takes to register a set is one PCGS slabbed coin that is part of the set. I think I've even seen a set with no coins in it.

Pedigreeing is re-holdering the coins with an insert with the owners name or collection name. It is only for the top 5 sets in any category. It is described in the benefits link from the registry page.

    Welcome to the boards.

It is free for the top 5 sets. Anyone can have their set pedigreed for the re-holder fee ( I am pretty sure of this ).

If this is not the case, please let me know.

  • Hi,
    Thanks for the info.
I have a set of proof mercs all PCGS PR 67.
Does this qualify for my name on the slab or should I add in a PR 68?
    Thanks for the info.

If your set is 100% complete, you will be tied for fouth with three others. I assume this would count as top 5. E-Mail PCGS to confirm.
