Trying to find info on a 1995 football autograph set

I occasionally see cards from the 1995 SP All-Pros insert set that are autographed and serial numbered (usually numbered to 500). Some sellers mention there is an Upper Deck hologram sticker on the back indicating authenticity.

Becket guides make no mention of an autographed parallel to that set--only the regular insert set (20 cards) and the "Gold" version parallel. Neither of which is autographed or serial numbered.

I've been looking around the internet for info or confirmation that this is a legit set. As noted, Beckett does not mention it, and the Upper Deck website checklists do not go back to 1995 anymore.

Whenever I find a mention of these cards on the web--it is usually a collector looking for one for their player collection, or a random dealer listing one for sale.

Does anyone know if this is a legit set and/or how they were distributed? I have thought about buying some--but don't want to waste money if these are bogus or fake auto cards.

I asked one seller who had one if he knew the background for the cards, and he said he had bought it as part of a large collection--so he could answer about that specific card or set.

Any help or knowledge would be appreciated.

I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

Looking for 66 and 69 OPC baseball
    60's OPC packs
    72 BB, 60's FB, 71FB, 73FB, 74FB, 75FB, 76FB, 78FB Rack Packs
    72 and earlier BB cello
  • Likely a Buyback card inserted into later releases of Upper Deck product(typically SP Authentic). They are all hand numbered differently and usually came with a separate authenticity card but had matching holograms.

Well, I went ahead and bought one--when it arrives, hopefully I can plug in the number on the hologram sticker somewhere at the Upper Deck site to get the proper identification/info for the card.

    Thanks for the replies.

I believe that is exactly what it is. Basically Upper Deck bought their older cards on the market, thus the term "Buy/Back"(or maybe had some excess inventory??). To add value they had the cards autographed and numbered and than inserted them into backs. I don't believe that they did this to creat "Buy/Back" sets but rather to just have randomly inserted autograph cards.

  • Just checked the Upper Deck website (WOW! It's practically impossible to find checklists on older products), but I found out that the 2000 SP Authentic football Buy/Back card set had 101 cards. Unfortunately, it doesn't offer a checklist of which cards are part of the Buy/Back. I know I've seen cards from multiple SP products from prior years. I would suggest checking under Beckett to see if they have a checklist for this.

I went to Beckett checklists and found 3 SP Authentic Buy Backs sets listed with checklists.

    1999 had 85 cards listed
    2000 had 105 cards listed
    2003 had 9 cards listed.

The card I purchased was not on any of these checklists--but I am thinking that the Beckett lists are either incomplete, or have a few errors--I have discovered some of their errors in the past.

Based on the descriptions of these Buy Back sets, it sounds exactly like the card I bought (1990's Upper Deck product card autographed with Hologram sticker on back, and hand serial-numbered on front).

The card I bought was a Michael Irvin autograph numbered to 500--according to Beckett checklists, he was not included in the Buy Back Auto inserts for any of the years they cataloged.

I either bought a fake or an as yet uncatalogued card.

  • The only other thing I can think of is that the card was not included in any product and was instead created to be sold through the Upper Deck store.

Her is the checklist for the 2000 SP Authentic buybacks. I don't see your card on there. This checklist is found in the PSA set registry.

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the list. I had checked it and several other Upper Deck related Buy Back sets checklisted on Beckett. No dice on Michael Irvin autos.

I received the card and logged into the Upper Deck site to plug in the hologram number--No Dice there either. Got a message that Items produced before 2002 are not listed.

So, I have sent an email to Upper Deck to check authenticity on the auto--will see how long it takes for a reply (if there is a reply).

Heard Garrard was back in practice today--hope he does well and keeps his starting job--I still collect his cards.

    Take Care,
    James
