Lincoln cent registry sets

Maybe I missed something---when the new type sets showed up the other day, the old ones went away: that is the old 1959-present has been REPLACED by the new 1950 - present.

But the Lincoln's which went up much earlier still have both the old and the new sets: there is a 1950 - present prrof and a 1959 - present proof---is Lincoln going to stay this way, or have they just not gotten around to (or forgotten) remove the old set designations?

Pete (with a Lincoln proof set that wouldn't do bad in a 59-current; but is still missing too many for the 50-current)

My opinion is that in the Lincoln proof category, we should have the following:
    1909- 1958 26 coins
    1936- 1958 17 coins
    1959- present basic set
    1959- present including varieties/errors

I agree we should have a set without the Matte Proofs because they are very difficult to get and many Lincoln set collectors just don't go after them. I see no reason to have the old 1909 to 1942 set remain because anyone owning those coins can very easily get the nine 1950's to complete the wheat back series. These coins can be in just red or if you are REALLY competing for finest set you could spend the bucks to get the rare cams and dcams from the 50's. I guess you could go for the cams from the 30's & early 40's also if you wanted a GREAT set. The point here is I think the four sets listed above for proof Lincolns should meet the needs of most set registry collectors. What do you think? Steveimage
  • Steve,

Odds are is that PCGS will consolidate these in the future. Will depend on which sets stay competitive. If collectors feel there is too much overlap and don't register in some of the categories, PCGS will eventually drop them.

Keith, I agree 100%. Maybe the first to go will be the 1909-1916 Matte Proof set. My opinion is that if you got those nine coins, you would want the next 17 just to complete the wheat backs. Steve

I had this discussion with David Hall, via E-mail a while back. His response was that collectors collect the Matte Proofs and then some collect the rest of the Wheat backs. Then the Memorials. That will be the Sets eventually.

    Registry 1909-1958 Proof Lincolns
  • I'm going to wait until things settle out, and we reach the final number of registery sets.

I can agree with almost all possible combinations of proofs. 1909 to 1916 is a must. 1936-1958 seems like the right division. One thing I'd like to see is a 1909 to present set.
I'd like to maintain only one set, even if I never complete it. I'll think about multiples at a later time.
