New Roman Republic

A new Roman Republic I picked up.

Coin looks much better in hand. Its has a circulated cameo look to it.

A nice looking coin. I always like that circulated cameo look on ancients. The darker toning in the fields and recesses really brings out the details. The folds of her dress are eye catching.
I collect history in the form of coins.

Lovely. I can see why it grabbed you.

I'm sticking to the Imperials for the time being, with my 12 Caesars set. But I have to admit that the Republican stuff is usually more attractive from an artistic standpoint. The trouble for me is, the Republican denarii don't fall into coherent "sets" as easily as something like a series of emperors do. I have the same problem with Greek coins- I could never figure out what parameters to map out a collection along. (I'm one of those people who needs a little "structure".) Of course the budgetary considerations of collecting ancient Greek silver is another thing that's prevented me from going there, as much as I love looking at the stuff. I do have a nice Alexander the Great tetradrachm on a huge flan coming my way soon, though- I gave it to my sister in 1998 and she's gonna swap it back to me.

The Republican coins seem like a nice, somewhat more affordable alternative to Greek stuff- in many cases, you get superb artistry without the astronomical prices.

Well my thing is I buy what I like. If I see it and the price is right, I will buy it. Surprisingly this coin was VERY cheap compared to the norm on Ebay, Vcoins and so on. It was one of those right place/right time. Plus knowing the dealer helped axe some of the cost too image But I still focus on Imperials.

Right now with my imperials I am trying to focus more on the Adoptive era. Relatively cheap & easy to get. I still need more 12 Caesars. image

Im the same way about greek silver, very expensive & I have yet to acquire one of any sort myself. Plus the amount of fakes turns me away from them too.

Would love to see the Alexander the Great tetradrachm when you get it. They're beautiful coins but man...costly :/

Roman republics though are interesting. I too like the art on them a bit more also but I do feel many are overpriced. And I am not a big fan of the Roma/Biga denarii.

FYI...this coin was made when Caesar was named Dictator of Rome image

    I thought so.

This one was made within a month or two of him gettin' whacked. image
Side note: NGC's photo service ain't so hot, but oh well. It's cheap. I could've done better slab pictures myself, though. Next time I'll skip the three bucks per coin. I much prefer the original seller's picture. It's an uglyish coin either way. But I'm fond of it, for obvious historical reasons.

Mine's probably got the heftier pricetag, but yours is definitely prettier! Nice pickup. Congrats.
