Kirk, long time no see. The '56 white back from #108 and higher (not sure where they start numerically exactly) have a glossier finish and can be spotted without even looking at the back of the card. I've never noticed a size variation. These cards typically sell for a premium.
The 1st series white backs are as common as the grey backs and sell about the same. some people prefer the grey backs in the 1st series because the print is typically much sharper and the white backs are more muted
In the 1st series 1-100, white backs are predominant. Not sure on a percentage, but you probably won't pay much of a premium for gray backs in the 1st series. The 2nd series 101-180 on the other hand, gray backs are much more predominant. Again, without any evidence I'd hate to place a percentage on it, but I'd say it's at least 5 to 1 gray back to white back. Stars especially (Mantle, Mays) will command a premium in white back. Personally, I prefer the gray backs. The white backs tend to have a "dirty" look in my eyes.
