Sterling Sharpe's Hall of Fame argument

Shannon Sharpe's induction this weekend got me thinking about his brother Sterling. I'm admittedly bias being a Packers Fan. Nonetheless, the numbers are fairly telling. Sterling only had the opportunity to play for 7 years before his career was cut short by injury. Due to his limited career length you get a better picture of his stats by looking at averages:

Sterling's averages
yards/year= 1,162
TDs/year= 9.3
Rec/year= 85
Yards/game= 72.6

His final three years 92-94 were his most prolific. Over that three year span he averaged: 105 receptions, 1,285 yards, and 14 touchdowns. With 18 TDs in 1994 which was 2nd all-time at the time. Sterling also was a 5-time pro bowl selection in his short career.

This article describes his short, but special career very well:

Below are the career statistics of Sterling and the other HOF or HOF candidate receivers from his era:

  • Sterling Sharpe is one of the greatest players not in the Hall of Fame. He was forced to retire just as Favre was entering the prime of his career. Five or Six years with Favre in his prime and Sterling probably has another 60 TDs and 7,000 more yards and definitely wins 1 Super Bowl and probably 2.

Would you really want a player to get inducted based on "what could have been"?

Terrell Davis is more deserving to me and neither will get in. Too big a backlog of guys that don't have the short career thing held against them.

Gale Sayers was elected after having played just 68 games:

I'd have no problem seeing Sterling Sharpe get in the Hall one day. He was truly dominant for most of his career, which is more than you can say for quite a few receivers already in the HOF. Hopefully they'll give him a closer look at some point. I think the short career comparison to Sayers is a fair one.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
