Which do you prefer?

Asking the board for thier expert guidance on this one and also what you think each is graded. Assuming the price for both was the same, which would you take?

    #2 by far.

I collect vintage by eye appeal, not by grade, so it wins for me.

While #2 is centered better....#1 appears to be a little cleaner...assuming it is not the scans...I will go with #1.

I would also take #1 for the same reason. It looks Cleaner.

Meteoriteguy, you are correct about "cleaner" in the sense that #1 has less toning. The edges on #1 are whiter, its not just the scan....I'm trying to figure out if I care or not though.

The small bit of aged staining on the second card does not bother me much....it just makes the card look its age a little more. Plus the second one is better centered, so I'd go with that one.

I'd prefer #1, for its brighter appearance.

  • #1 appears to have a bit of a tilt because the black box at the bottom is printed slightly off to the left. #2 has much better color, IMO, and I don't mind the toning. #2 it is.

For me the big thing is the dirty look of the second card. I chose the first card in a previous post which is how I still feel. I usually don't mind the dirty look but the second card has a little too much for my taste. If it was a little lighter I would definitely choose the second card.

As of now I think #2....but I'd like to see them both with the same camera/scanner (notice the major difference in the brightness of the black writing of the PSA label).

Guess the grades - ballpark 7's

Bottom one. Print defects on the one on top bother me.

    Good for you.
  • Going by the scans supplied #2 all the way. I'm guessing PSA 6?

My biggest thing for cards is clarity and registration. I think #1 is so much nicer in those categories, so I go with #1.

I'm not seeing what others are seeing. Registration and clarity seems much stronger on the second card to me...other than toning (which I like anyway), the card is centered, has less print defects, and has no halo around the ink layers the way the first copy appears to.

I almost go crosseyed looking at #1.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the insight. My bias before posting this was that I liked #2 better. My biggest issue with #1, which surprisingly only 1 person brought up (TheBusiness), was that the black name box was printed slightly to the left which makes the card appear uneven, almost akin to a tilt. Once I noticed that, I couldn't get it out of my head and its all I thought about every time I looked it. That one flaw became much more significant for me than the moderate toning on #2.

So, I wound up buying #2 which will be my 2nd biggest purchase for my All Time Braves set, along with my 54 Aaron. I've been outbid on several other Spahns over the years at auction and am FINALLY glad to add one to my collection.

Both of the Spahns pictured above were graded 6 and they were priced within $25 of each other.

Which imo is a registration issue.
