The OGH PR65RB will probably do a bit better than the previous ones have recently. It's got a nice even color. My guess is $42500. Maybe more???

They both look great to me. I think both auction houses did some pretty good picture taking this time too.

Man, these "rare" coins sure are hitting the market more and more...seems like all you need is the $, and you can buy one at any given time.

I agree its hard to call coins like 1909S VDB or 1922 no d or 1914D lincoln cents rare when you see them at every coin show whilie this is not to the same level they are coming to market more often

I wonder if OGH means rattler in this instance....

I don't think so. I can't see the three clear rattler prongs, and the listing descriptions usually say OGH-First Generation.

That's a good number for the NGC coin. I still think the PCGS coin will do better.

I don't know if it sold or not, but the Stacks example went off at $27,500.

Both looked like nice coins from the pics, but IMO the train left the building 2 years ago on these. The daily hype level is not here on MPL's like it used to be. IMO this is one coin that can have huge price swings (1909 VDB MPL) compared to other series rare dates. There is still hope that i will aquire one in the future if the market continues on the downward slope. ( or maybe Steve will upgrade his 61image someday )

    Hi Mark,
Don't count on me upgrading my PR61 anytime soon. I gotta believe that ANY PCGS slabbed 1909VDB proof is now worth at least five figures and I just can't afford to pay for it. Besides, I LOVE my example more than ever!

What is happing to the 1909 VDB MPL prices. Perhaps people are starting to think alittle before buying them? After all as Kevin Flynn states in his book there are over a thousand coins out there somewhere. And more and more are going on sale. I do think the prices are going to go down even more for the lower graded ones.

The PCGS 65RB coin went off cheaply because its surfaces were dull and lifeless. Obverse like the reverse. I guess it still takes a nice coin to get the bids coming in.

One thing you need to understand about the 1909VDB MPL. It is a RARE coin in absolute terms. Most knowledgeable people in the hobby believe that less than 200 of these coins exist today. When was the last time you saw one of these coins in a PCGS, NGC or ANACS slab advertised in ANY numismatic publication or available on Teletrade? The only source I've seen in recent years is via public auction or by private treaty. It is true that the pricing on this coin has gone down in the last few years, but NOT because the supply has increased. I believe the physical supply of these coins are primarily in the hands of true collectors who want them for their collection. About 10 to 20 are "available" via auction at any point in time and are the ones you see and hear about. Key dealers in the hobby can probably point you to the owners of these coins, and some of them may be in high grade. Also, don't be taken in by the many RAW coins out there masquerading as 1909VDB MPL's. If it is NOT in a PCGS or NGC slab, there is a REASON. The hobby does not accept these coins as true MPL's and the value of them are suspect. All of this is JMHO, but feel free to comment. Steveimage
  • 200 in existence. Say MINIMUM 100 never to see the light of day. Say $30-40k average for all else = a mere $3-4M to corner the market? image

I don't collect these at all but wonder where the 200 number comes from? With 1000 minted, and the number I see at shows and auctions I would have to guess there are more than that around. I think the matte finish is lovely by the way, some of my fav's in my collection are the 1902 matte proof British pieces.

In any event I think the most interesting thing to discuss is absolute rarity. If in fact there are only 200 known then it would just be getting to the scarce/very scarce point in my areas of collecting. But as I said they seem to be available any time you want one, just pony up a few dollars and it's yours. Luckily for me there are only two other collectors in some of the stupid areas I dabble in so I can buy pieces with 3-5 known for under a grand. It seems the old supply and demand thing is working to price these, since there are obviously more people wanting to collect them than are available.

I think that 200 number is roughly what the TPGs have slabbed. IMO, I would reduce that # to 150 to accomodate for crosses and crackouts given the $ that can be made on these. Next I would knock out another 50 assuming they are unappealing/have issues. Given the amount that are left, the strong hands some are in, and given that Lincolns are one of the top 2 series collected, there certainly aren't enough around to meet the demand hence the rarity perception and pricing.

I would guess more than a few were ruined many years ago. As far a key date goes i would say they have lead a rough life compared to other keys in other series. There are probably less than 100 examples worth owning.

1909 MPL rare, I saw 5 at Chicago two were in the auctions two were on display in a exhibit and the other one was on display by Mr. McCullagh.

Angel Dee's has one for sale on their web site a few times a year.
