another psycho star-dinger for your BBL: djjsjr

Retraction posted 2:40PM eastern time July 29

Ran reports to isolate specific item numbers, and the star-dinger is actually djjsjr, not b5ranger99, although b5ranger99 gave only 4 stars when he could have given 5.

On July 6, this baseball sold for $15.33 plus $6.00 shipping. The buyer was ebay user b5ranger99.

The buyer included a note with his payment that said, "Please mark personal on outside of package," and paid immediately. Based on the destination zip code, Parcel Post was more expensive than Priority Mail. Despite the buyer's specification requesting Economy Shipping, I sent it Priority, since I knew that would get it there faster. It cost me $4.80 in postage paid online with free DC and no surcharge, but I made sure the amount of postage paid was not printed on the label. I also used the "Print SKU/order number on label" option in ebay shipping to mark it "PERSONAL."

This is a screen image of the shipping label before I printed it.

As you can see from the tracking page, I dumped it at the post office Thursday, July 7, and it was delivered Saturday, July 9, barely three days after payment was sent. As a side note, this proves to all the green DC label loving sellers that packages with electronic labels can and do get scanned for acceptance. This package was not unique in that respect either.

In any case, I had posted positive feedback for the buyer immediately upon receiving payment. Then yesterday, July 27, after attempting absolutely no communication with me whatsoever, he posted supposedly positive feedback with the comment, "Nice addition to my collection, shipped quickly, securely, reasonable shipping," along with the following star ratings:

Item as described: 1
Communication: 1
Shipping time: 1
Shipping and handling charges: 4

I know it was this specific buyer, because I sell so few items now and the last feedback as seller that was posted for me was almost a week prior, on July 21. At that time, all my ratings over the past 3 months were 5 stars across the board. Not a single buyer in the last three months had given me less than 5 stars in any category up until yesterday.

You can see my feedback as seller as well as the Ratings Report I just generated a few minutes ago.

There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever. The chance that it was this specific buyer, b5ranger99, who dinged my stars while leaving a so-called positive comment, is 100%. Either he was angry because he didn't see that the label was marked "PERSONAL" and assumed that I ignored his note included with his payment, or he's just a psycho loser buyer. In either case, his actions are completely out of line.

I don't care about losing my 20% seller fees discount, because I just received it a few weeks ago anyway (after having sold a lot of stuff over the winter to barely qualify as a bronze powerseller) and I hardly sell anything anymore. But the outrageous actions of this buyer are worthy of being outed in a public forum.

Typical eBay buyer. I have never tried it before, but I have seen other people post that it is against eBay policy to leave low DSRs with a positive, so if you wanted to go through the trouble you may be able to get it removed.

  • Yeah, I'm aware of that... it's just not worth it to me to begin fighting with a bunch of ebay-employed sea urchins. I don't sell enough for this to make a difference to me financially, but I posted because I wanted to warn people who are vulnerable to this kind of nonsense.

From my dealings with these turds and eBay customer service just so you know star ratings can take up to 3 weeks to update so time alone doesn't necessarily rule out someone else didn't leave the bad stars if you got other feedback in the last 3 weeks of noticing the change.

Call eBay a few times and you will eventually get a rep who will just wipe out the feedback and star ratings from this guy all together if he is the one who did indeed leave bad stars with that type of worded feedback. Threaten to quit eBay also if they refuse to help you.

Could it be that he thinks the ratings are reversed? He may think that one is great and he dinged you with a four for shipping costs.

On second thought, it seems that he is trying to hide his purchase from somebody by having it labeled "personal". Maybe from parents, rommates, etc.... And since your "personal" wasn't obvious enough, his mom accidentally opened it and questioned him about it.

That's good information to know. So I guess theoretically, it's possible that the star-dinger was a different buyer. But looking at the two previous feedbacks, one was on July 21, and the buyer explicitly stated a desire to purchase more stuff from me in the future if I get any more Ripken items, and the other was a flawless sale of old Coke bottles with feedback posted on July 5, not even within your 3 week window.

So I'm pretty sure we know who the culprit is, although I suppose the guy who bought the Ripken cut and posted feedback on July 21 could be responsible. I think that's highly unlikely.

<< <i>Could it be that he thinks the ratings are reversed? He may think that one is great and he dinged you with a four for shipping costs. >>

Possible, but I doubt it. The guy has been using ebay for a long time and has nearly 500 positive feedbacks. He should know that 5 is more than 1.

That's what I'm thinking too. It was sent to a business address, so he's not hiding it from his mom, but more likely his boss or co-workers. The fact still remains that I followed his instructions and he has no right to ding my stars on that basis. I don't care if the word "PERSONAL" was printed in tiny 0.5 type font. It was there because I put it there at his request, and that's what matters.

I'm sure that is what happened. The mailroom probably opens everything unless it is obviously labeled "personal" or "confidential". When it got to his desk, it was opened. The mailroom probably didn't even peak inside, but your buyer is embarassed none the less, therefore, it's your fault.

You can tell who dings your stars by running reports. I just found out the person who dinged my stars is a BIG sports card seller on Ebay with over 20,000 feedbacks. He obivously does it to try and thin out the competition. He won my card via auction, got it cheaper than what I paid for it, dinged my stars in the process, and now it is for sale in his store for $30 more than what he paid for mine. Talk about the ultimate slap in the face! KBCards showed me how to use item numbers instead of dates for your reports. Run a report of 10 and INCLUDE the auction you think dinged your stars. Then run ANOTHER report using the same 10, drop out the one you think did it, and substitute another one in its' place - see what happens.......

  • I ran a total of 4 reports using item numbers like Bobby said, and the results were not what I expected. The buyer who is the subject of this thread gave me 4 stars for Item as described, Communication, and Shipping and handling charges. He either gave me a 5 or no rating for Shipping time.

The schmuck who bought the Ripken cut gave me 1 star across the board except for Shipping and handling charges, because that item had free shipping, so he couldn't ding that one. djjsjr added to BBL. He's a relatively new buyer and might think 1 star is better than 5 stars. Why are some people so stoopid?

Just as I stated. The star ratings do not update in a timely manner always. Try to contact eBay so they can make it right or even reach out to the buyer asking him what is up. Do it within the eBay message system so that if he says that he didn't mean to do it or didn't do it the eBay rep who helps you can see this and this will further help you with getting the eBay rep to erase the feedback.

    TOS

    The fine print

It's against eBay policy to question buyers about the ratings they left. It's also against policy to use these reports to interfere with the anonymity of detailed seller ratings. For more information, read the Feedback manipulation policy.

    ............

Best to let EBAY contact the buyer; you can easily get suspended
    for doing it yourself.
