Can anyone enlighten me about this "Hoard" **Got an answer from NGC **

Pick this up the other day only because I'm a fool for hoard slabs.
Does anybody know the background on this hoard? Google didn't
show much.
Thanks

Several of those televised coin shows use "hoard" to describe large purchases of the same coin from the same place. I suppose it helps sales to have that designation on the slabs.

  • lol so if i slabbed anything from one of my MB's i can have the "james murray hoard" on the label with NGC ? Bust open a roll of 2009 zincolns and ditto .. wow..i didn't realise we are all sitting on a hoard.
  • I would guess that someone from Chicago had 500 graded and was able to designate a pedigree for the lot.

I believe this was a monster box set of coins from 1986 to 2008. Most coins graded 69, there are a few 70s (but not enough to make a set), and there are also 68s.

    They are quite popular.

Any bets that he was a telemarketer whose target audience wasn't experienced coin collectors?

Why don't you call NGC Customer Service and ask them what it is?
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

You can buy the 500 eagle green boxes from many large bullion dealers.
Send in 500 of the same coin (in this case a 500 box of eagles) and ngc will write whatever you want on the label

may the fonz be with you...always...

So I emailed NGC rather than calling.
Here is their reply and most of y'all where right.

Thank you for your email. This was a multiple-palate group (100k+) of
mixed-date silver eagles, all in their original US Mint boxes of issue.
They had been stored in a vault in Chicago. The submitter requested a
special label and name for the collection that described its origins,
thus Windy City Monster Box Hoard.

Please feel free to email or call us should you have any further
    questions.

    Thank you,

    Lisa

I recall Coin Vault speaking about a smiliar if not the same marketing angle a few years ago.

    100,000 coins -- yeah that's a hoard.

Were the 86,000 silver dollars submitted to PCGS this summer designated as a specific hoard, the "Sorry (But Not Really) For Slowing Down Everyone's Submissions" Hoard, perhaps?

    Nothing special about that coin.

But if you like collecting that kind of fringe stuff I'm all for it. I'm into fringe stuff.
