Barry Bonds Rookie Cards...

I just ran an EBAY recent sales search on Barry Bonds cards. His 1987 Fleer Glossy in PSA 9 is $12. That was a $250 card at one point.

This guy may be the player that has caused the greatest losses in any persons card collection ever!

His cards for a time were like gold and have been in a steady decline for years. To imagine his card in 1987 Fleer Glossy in PSA 9 Mint is $12.99 is insane.

The guy is a total bum but this is a little shocking that a Vodka drink in many major cities costs more then his rookie card graded.

I realize prices are driven by collectors interest and I am just a little shocked that these continue to slide. At some point he may not be worth the grading fees let alone the raw card.

Wild stuff!!

That price tag is sad. I remember buying 87 Donruss Bonds and Bonilla cards together in 90 or 91 for about $12 a piece and they were obviously raw and not in 9-grade condition. I really only wanted the Bonilla but the guy at the card show talked me into buying the pair together. LOL...And that was way before Bonds was considered to be among the greatest HR hitters (not even currently playing, certainly not all-time). Amazing that prices have settled back down in that range.

To see a sad trail of tears, check out the VCP history of PSA 10 1986 Topps Tiffany Bonds cards.

Many folks who show up as buyers show up as sellers a few months later, and sold for losses. Those buyers then flipped the Bonds card for a loss as well.

  • Seems $250 would be a solid price for a 87 Fleer Glossy PSA 10 Bonds. The Glossy set isn't worth a lot so $16 seems about right. Either way, they'll never be worth anything near that.

I was sure Bonilla would end up being the bigger star of the BB Brothers. I keep a game used Bonilla bat handy to hit myself with everytime I want to invest in any player without a long history.

I was finally on the right side of a Barry Bonds sale. I sold a 1987 Fleer Bonds PSA 10 card for $420.00 several years ago. I sold several PSA 9's of the card for about $75.00 each. Oh the good old days.................

  • Sold a Fleer PSA 10 for about $55, not Glossy 2 weeks ago. The players that took the juice made a lot of juice. We the collectors and fans spilled our juice. I'm switching tea..

I know many collectors soured on Bonds for obvious reasons. I think though a huge part of the price drops is that there are 10 zillion of his 1987 cards out there, and really those are his "2nd year" cards. I know his 1986 Topps Tiffany cards still sell at very high prices.

Don't do it, Rick. There are some respectable Big Cat Andres Gallaraga RCs and Will Clark RCs that I'd hate to see go up in flames.

We should do a case break on the CU boards. I LOVE 86 Topps Traded...

Its the Era the card is from not so much the players on the card.... none of those late 1980-early 90s cards will ever be worth more than the shipping it costs to send them!

    overproduced garbage!

Are you referring to the 88 Fleer Update Smoltz 10s which sell for $350, the 89 Fleer Griffey Glossy 10s that sell for $1,000, or the 91 Desert Shield Chipper 10's that sell for $2,000? Wasn't sure which of the garbage you were talking about.

Most of the cards from that era will not maintain much value but as McAdams stated there are many cards from that period in high grade that bring some cash.

I bought two sets of the 1989 Fleer Glossy for $158 delivered three months ago and one of the cards is on EBAY and it is definately worth more then the sets and the shipping.

Remember how collectors, after having gotten all of Bonds' mainstream RC/XRCs started after his other "rookie" cards including the 1987 Topps Glossy All Star (from the send away set), 1987 Toys R' Us, 1987 Fleer Hottest Stars and my favorite, the 1987 Classic? I was planning on getting all four of these but only got the Classic in PSA 9.

Sadly, the same can be said about Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Roger Clemens rookie cards.

Where does that Smoltz sell for $350?
