Not too hard when the messenger obviously does have a personal axe to grind, has been convicted by a court of exactly what he is accusing, and presents no evidence to support what he is saying.

The Hall of Fame has removed numerous Halper items that were donated by MLB (who bought them from Halper); They have also removed Halper's name from a room/exhibit space that was named after him....

Would they do this with the so called lack of evidence?

Definitely helps balance things a bit but...

It's pretty hard to ignore, if true, the fact that several of Halper's items had markings and so forth from libraries from which they'd been stolen.

I've got several books with library markings on them. They were deaccessioned and sold. Unless a library keeps pretty good records of what is legitimately sold off, it is unlikely that theft could be proven.

I find it reprehensible that an individual like Peter Nash is attempting to assassinate the character of a dead man. In my view, it is merely a diversionary tactic to make his own transgressions in the hobby appear less egregious by comparison.

what isn't even reported now because it's "old news." but when the Auction Catalog came out in 1999 or so there were several Louisville Slugger contracts included in it (most notably Jackie Robinson) which Louisville Slugger claimed were stolen from them and I seem to think they used the legal system to have them pulled from the auction and returned to them.

im not saying Halper stole those himself, but it's kind of unsettling that his collection contained so many stolen pieces.

  • Just found this while checking out older messages here. The link from the first post no longer works. Is this true ? Barry Halper's stuff was completely a farce ? Was this guy a complete fraud ? I recall reading about Halper's stuff years ago. All fake stuff ? wow, that is disconcerting to trust this hobby.
  • He wasn't completely a farce, but many of the items were found to be fake. I believe there were also some stolen items...

Anyway here is another article. Article
  • thanks. Wow. Never Never Never Never beleive an autograph is legit after seeing this. The man was pristine hobby notoriety. Never Never Never trust an auto anywhere. Unless in person, it's fake. (exagerated slighlty, but no way). This is bad and dissapointing.
  • There's no way that a collection of that size could have been 100% unimpeachable, but Peter Nash's reputation precedes him. His rivalry, for lack of a better term, with Halper is also well documented. I think Halper's stuff was a lot better than these recent articles have portrayed.

There's no proof that Halper knowingly bought or sold fraudulent merchandise, and there's no proof that the items marked as being owned by libraries were actually stolen. Again, I'm not saying all of Halper's collection was perfect or that the accusations against him are completely fabricated lies. I'm just saying to consider the source. If I had to pick who is the worse liar, I'd take Halper's word over Nash's seven days a week.

    Tommy McCarthy's will

Think about how you would get someone's last will and testament after their death. Hint: it's a legal document and the original is filed with a court.

Courts do not sell these things off. If someone gets it, it was stolen.

Halper had it. He had to know it was stolen. Peter Nash doesn't even enter into this - Nash was in elementary school when Halper was bragging publicly about his ownership of a unique, stolen official record.

    That's called proof. Halper's trustworthiness is 0.

That's not proof, that's making a whole bunch of assumptions that can't be drawn about McCarthy's will unless you have some unique knowledge that isn't being shared. It's not unusual for there to be multiple originals of wills, especially in those times. To jump to the assumption that Halper's copy of McCarthy's will was stolen from a court is quite a leap. There's plenty of info about stuff in his collection to try to draw conclusions from, but that example is not proof of anything IMO.

Never, never, never, never believe a high grade vintage card (either in a slab or unslabbed) is legit. Some of the most insane card collections on the plenet have doctor's handiwork in their collection. Unless it was taken directly from the manufacturing plant, straight to the grader, be wary. But then you have to deal with fired up printing presses years after the initiual issue (IE, Upper Deck) or tampered with slabs.

LOL, the above is written tongue in cheek, but there is FRAUD in every realm of sports collecting and generally in every realm of most things where money is involved (which is also heavily counterfeited). To categorically right off a collectible is your prerogative, but if people wrote off everything that had any fraud aspect to it, it would be a totally boring hobby for what was left.
