Allen & Ginter - The autograph list LOL

I collected this autograph subset for 3 years in a row- mostly for laughs, but it got to be rather expensive so I'm not doing it this year. Now keep in mind that Allen & Ginter was originally, back in 1887, a tobacco brand who's advertising slogan for their cards was "The Worlds Champions". Not just baseball of course, the interesting thing about them was that they included boxers, pool players, shooters, etc. etc.

Fastforward to current day. Each year, Topps continues to push the envelope for their definition of what constitutes a "Champion" I thought Topps hit a low in 2009 by including autos of the purported world's greatest Donkey Kong arcade game player, Dan Wiebe, and for also including an auto insert of a special olympics bowler whose signature I could not deciper. But I must say that we've reached, in 2011, perhaps the most aggresive use ever of the term "Champion"......

I give to you......television B-list and TV Low-Ratings Champions Chuck Woolery and The Super Nanny

To underscore your point, it's Steve Wiebe, not Don. The King of Kong was a great movie.

and to top it off even further you couldn't tell whose signature either one was if you didn't know it.......reminds me of when I opened packs from a basketball set years ago, which I can't remember the exact one where the signatures were all unlegible garbage....

A&G reborn has played it self out.
The cards are good for getting signed but as a ongoing concept to me it's about done.
I see this as a reflection of Topps cheapness.

I agree, that's rather ridiculous for "The World's Champions". HOWEVER, as a kid who grew up on 80's game shows, I'm interested in the Chuck Woolery auto if you were looking to dump it. image

And yes, King of Kong was a really excellent movie.

Those pics aren't my cards OR I would be happy to sell them to you. Are you gonna kick off the Chuck Woolery registry set? And is there a need for a master set, given that he only has 1 card?

What ticks me off is I bought an A&G blaster last night from Walmart, and considering the dreck that was in there, I would have been very happy to have gotten a Chuck Woolery autograph card. LOL

There have been plenty of people featured in these sets that will never find there way on another trading card.

I pulled the first Sig Hansen Auto to hit EBAY last year and I might have considered keeping a Chuck W auto. The Love Conection was a great show!

Don't be surprised if that card is a decent hit for a while.

If there was an A&G Game Show Hosts auto registry, I guarantee you that is one I would work on. Woolery, Trebek, Sajack, Bob Barker, Dick Clark... it would be a pretty cool (to me) subset. Again, I grew up on these shows and wanted to BE a game show host.

I agree. Even for non-arcade fans, King of Kong is fantastic. It's good vs evil in a true story told in a very compelling fashion. I highly recommend watching the DVD twice - once for the movie and then once with the director's commentary turned on. The commentary is FANTASTIC.

Also recommended: "Chasing Ghosts" and "High Score".

  • I love the screwy autos that they include in these sets, but the Super Nanny, come on they could have done better than that.

    Tabe,

Any idea where I can pick up a copy of "Chasing Ghosts"? It doesn't look like it has ever been officially released from what I can tell.

I got mine through less-than-honorable means. I can't remember if I got a copy from someone or if I torrented it. Of "High Score" and "Chasing Ghosts", I got one from somebody and the other via torrent, can't remember which was which.
