Auto Opinions... Elway, Smoltz, Maddux, Joe Carter

I got these done by a member on another message board @ the Tahoe golf event last weekend... does anyone think these are good? I have some serious doubts about these. Thanks in advance for some of your expertise!

Jason, don't know Smoltz or Carter well enough to comment. The Elway is very bothersome to me, and frankly the Maddux is so difficult, as he is so messy, that my concern is that looks to good for Maddux, especially considering he was gotten while most likely walking between holes versus sittind down at a table or something. Very suspicious to me.

It does seem a bit strange to me that John, John, and Joe have the same exact loop for their Js

I got a couple from the same member. Here are a few more for consideration....

JM, that Maddux looks forced. The more I look at this stuff the more it doesnt look right to me...just my gut feeling.

Guys, those are pretty nice Maddux forgeries if indeed they are forged. The Elway's are all bothersome to me. I don't think any of three are real.

edit to add: the J in John does not look right out of the gate. The auto is much more compact than typical Elway's as well.

Guys, just read the Tahoe thread on SCN. I am really sorry to read what I just read. I think you guys know this stuff is bogus. Makes it trust anyone going forward with these 50/50 and consignments. Wow!

Who was the member on SCN?

I'm certainly not an autograph expert but it appears the Smoltz, Elway and Carter could have been signed by the same individual.

The same guy def penned the Carter & Smoltz but why would anyone forge a Joe Carter signature?

to me the carter looks very close... but all the J's do look alike so I really feel like this guy faked everything - kind of sucks someone would do this. I guess the saying is true if the price is too good it's probably fake!

I hate to say it, but they all are some pretty good forgeries. Even advanced collectors will miss out & think they are real.
This is what it's come to though. SOB's forging freaking Joe Carter!
The question is how long has this guy been doing this & how many people have been ripped off.

I got all those autos at Tahoe....I got Smotlz, Maddux on trading cards and Joe Carter and John Elway in the program. I think that Joe Carter would sign a card but I did not see Elway sign anything other than tourney memorabilia and a jersey.

That's what everyone was saying about Elway... the guy said he got Elway at the airport or hotel or something.

Could you please post some scans of the auto's you got at the event.

the guy has over 60+ positive transactions on SCN - and most collectors over there know their stuff! He is currently taking consignments for the Yankees - I can't see that turning out very well!!!!

LOL on Joe Carter... who the hell forges a Joe Carter auto - does a forger have no shame?

Jason ... man, this really sucks! Did you ever deal with this guy before? Was he active on SCN? Although I joined there I hardly ever visit.

I'll try to post what I have but there is also an ebay seller who has a signed Dan Quayle card and all his autos look pretty legit to me. He is selling off the RCs of the guys that would not sign trading cards and his other stuff looks good to me. There is a bit of variety to some autographs but some of the rush between holes has something to do with it. These still look good IMHO.

Maybe someone could post a link to his auctions. He sold a few items from the tourney including signed cards of Smoltz and Maddux.

I know there's no way obviously to get the cards & Super Bowl tickets back cause they are ruined now, but is there any chance to get refunds?
I don't know how all of it works & can't read about it on SCN.

I found the guys stuff and I don't think my Carter matches up to his...

It might not match up perfectly but it's pretty close.
Then you add in a rushed signature maybe.
I really don't know what to believe anymore and
Am confused as hell right now.
I hope somebody finds out the truth for everybody.

I'm on the fence with em, but I think it's harder for me to be unbiased given that they're mine. With that being said, if they are fake they're pretty good. The point about them being similar "J"s is a good one. I think they do look too similar. I don't know what to think.
  • cubfan89cubfan89 Posts: 632 ✭✭✭
I might be wrong, but I think I'm going to change my mind & say these are authentic and that this guy has some sort of connection or access to VIP areas at these fictions.

I'm starting to think these might be real... just not sure I've sent out for PSA/DNA QO - so we'll see.

I am very bothered by the similarity of the J's on all the cards AND the tilt of the signature is the same on all of them. The angle of the signature (tilted up or parallel to bottom of card) should have changed some with the different signers. All 4 of the cards have the same slightly upward tilt. IMO, the same person signed all 4.

  • They all look like they were written by the same person. The J's are so similiar on the 3. The Maddux is way too full of a signature.

In my opinion all 4 are fakes. I've spent a lot of time looking at all but the carter, but even that one doesn't look genuine in my opinion.

I don't think they are good. I don't see Elway signing for a guy that much either...at an airport or like.

I thought I would post a few of my Tahoe graphs for others to see since there was some debate on autos........ I just have my card autos scanned for the moment. I received all of these in person and know they are 100% authentic. :-)

My Elways, Bettis, and Rypien all passed PSA/DNA. I didn't send my Maddux in.....So it was 4/4 of what I sent that passed.
