Question for Player Collectors, who collect slabs of their player

sorry for the mouthful of a title image

i was wondering if you get more pleasure out of submitting the cards yourself, or it doesnt matter, as long as you have the card slabbed?

obviously cost efficiency SCREAMS that you should just buy said card(s) already slabbed, because for the most part, it's cheaper.

but isnt there something to the feeling of having been the one that submitted the card yourself? add on top of that if you even pulled it out
of a pack yourself?

i'd love to hear your thoughts

Thanks for the read,
Eric

Personally, I would just buy Gem Mint (BGS 9.5 or PSA 10s) of my players rookie year...it's easier, cheaper and no work/stress.

For me. I enjoy both buying already graded and turning them in for grading. I think I get a little more satisfaction when I turn a card over to PSA and it comes back Gem Mint! Still finding a card that you haven't seen in years pop up and you snag it is quite rewarding as well.

Eric ... stick with good economics and you will enjoy the card just as much!

if you can find them, buy them already slabbed. It is always cool when you submit and get a 9 or 10 of a card though. A lot of the cards I am looking for I have to submit myself.

there is nothing finer than the thrill of the chase and eventual capture, but the range is filled with pratfalls.

sometimes, that raw meat tastes strange.

unlike the habits of wild cats, though, our best catches are not devoured or shared with other members of the pride.

well, they do get a scan from time to time.

When I was building a player set I enjoyed not only subbing the cards myself, but also finding new ones to be added to the list. I think I tripled the Mike Bossy Master Set....somewhere from approximately 30 cards to about 100. Lots of fun.

If you are happy with 9-10's, and have a good eye, submit yourself. If you want all 10's..and the player is modern....just spend the extra 2-3$ and buy graded.

Interestingly, I have maybe 5000-6000 graded cards...and have never submitted.

    Great question Eric,

I started my collection before 3rd party grading services were around. Most of those cards are still "raw", however as the hobby changed, mostly because of eBay, I decided to purchase graded. I submitted a couple of my early cards, one I thought might be altered (came back a 9) and the other because I thought it might get a 9 (came back an 8).

I joined the PSA Registry and added cards through eBay purchases, 80% were graded. I have always been apprehensive to send in my cards for some strange reason. Recently I have consigned my "extra" cards to a eBay seller and he is submitting some of my "raw" cards. I am curious and excited to see what happens, kind of like the lottery. I hope none of them come back ungraded.

I don't know if it's going to be cheaper or more expensive for me, if a couple of the cards I submitted come back 8.5's or 9's I am going to be WAY ahead, 7.5's or 8's about even, but if they come back altered or evidence of trimming, it's going to hurt BAD.

I collect vintage cards so pulling one from a pack and sending it in doesn't apply to me. One thing I miss is going to a card shop or show and finding a gem while spending time with other collectors.

I prefer to buy them already slabbed--with as many players as I collect, playing the guessing game with submitting has too many lows, and not enough highs--I like it safe and fast.
Plus, I am not competing with others about having the best examples--I just want them authentic and unaltered.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

Some great replies fellas, i really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

im on the fence. my current focus for something like this are George Brett and Mick Schmidt from their playing days.
so that means a lot of affordable unopened product, thats for sure. but it also means a lot of lack of quality control
as the companies were too busy killing forrests to get their product out asap! LOL
