Reholder question from a newbie

I have several slabs that are scratched or chipped. They contain the old yellow and green slabs. If I send them in for reholdering, do they come back with the same color tab or with a new blue one? image

  • Welcome to the boards StormChaser !

I learned from a slab collector (Condor101) that those yellow ones used to be green ones but have faded. Perhaps they sat in sunlight for a few days or something.
  • the new label..but doesnt PCGS charge $5 each to reholder slabs, plus your pay S/H?

As to the yellow versus green, I find it hard to believe that it was a result of fading... I used to have examples of both, and it seems to me that if it were a result of fading, there would be lots of intermediate colors- which I never saw. Just green... and that really mustard-yellowish green...?

    Hmmm. Interesting. image

  • Along these same lines , I have 2 SBA coins that were slabbed before they put the wide rim designation on the holder. To add this designation to the holder , I guess they'd have to be re-slabbed , would the cost still be $ 5 ? Thanks !!

  • Howie,

Yes, except the service is called Designation Review. If the coin does not receive a new designation, they don't reholder it. Still costs $5 for the service.

Designation review is full grading cost. It cost me $25 to get my PR65 Liberty Nickel into a PR65DCAM holder. In the same submission, my local dealer paid $25 to have his Franklin half returned untouched, and $25 to have PCGS send his rare $20 Liberty to someone else. Still not sure if PCGS has found the coin to return to him yet.

  • dblidie55,

May depend on the age of the coin. I got a designation review on the SBA in question for $5 last year, but it is a modern. Have also got the DC added to Modern Commems for $5 each that way in the past. Have never sent a classic in for review, so I can see where they may be higher.

  • Howdy all and thanks for the information. As far as the tabs go, a couple of them are the mustard-yellowish color. I do have a couple of the greens that have partially faded and are a different color. As for paying the $5 dollar fee and s/h fees to have these reholdered, it is well worth it. Most of these slabs have survived tornadoes. It looks as if somebody has sandblasted them. It's really not cool.
