Results in from an old time Walker set

seateddimeseateddime Posts: 6,169 ✭✭✭
Most every coin in the set is ANACS photo certificate 65/65 and has been sitting in a Whitman Album since the early 80's.

While the grades are not stellar, the coins are 110% original and I just submit the set as a whole, without reveiw. I can't wait to see the coins in hand with the grades on the holders.

It is not everyday you see an original set of Walkers graded.

Interesting that only 5 made it to the 65 Grade that ANACS had thought they were.

Results in from an old time Walker set...has been sitting in a Whitman Album since the early 80's.

You sure know how to make a guy feel old!

BTW, I'm sure I put more than 100 of these sets together in the early 80's, and I can't say that they were especially choice or fresh. Most were unc, though.

This set was the best that could be put together at local Hollywood shows, some coins were purchased at $200 - $400 then like 41s, 42s and 44s.

I will post some pictures and photo certificates when the coins come back.

I figured 25% would 66 and about 1/2 65's, did not see the AU58's coming but in all fairness I did not look hard at them.

Still a cool originally matched set with 30 years of original album toning. Interesting they gave no + to any coins. On the 38 and 39 proof sets I submitted I got several. For estate purposes I am grading most anything raw, These coins will stay together for a long time, if I am lucky.

It was an older slider album, the coins toned more of a golden blue, they look better as a set.

Put together about the same time I did my Whitman album short set....years later after moving into the slabbed coins, I brought a few of these to our coin club auction. No buyers - they did not like that blue/dark gold toning on the peripheries. One woman asked me if the coins had been "in a fire or something"......image

I can't believe ANACS graded coins MS65/65 way back then, which ended up in AU58 holders. I am also surprised there is not a single 66 in the group. How carefully were the coins stored since the original grading? Looks like a great set in any event!

Edited: Duh, I should have read the whole thread. Is there any way the coins could have become AU58s while sitting in the album?

The coins were in a bank vault untouched in a nice Whitman album. I am really suprised there were no 66's in the set, even more so than the 58's. They were really hard on these coins.

Frankly, I think you did pretty good. ANACS coins (even from the 80's) are not often found graded in a manner similar to that of PCGS.

Looks like the ones that matter got 64 or better. I bet they look nice.

As far as the 58's...........some 58's look like 65's without very careful looking with a glass.

Funny thing is I sent in a SLQ I got back a few days ago ANACS called 55/55

It came back a 62, I think it could easily have graded 63 too.

You seem sure. How do you know this?

Even more to the point, do you think the originality (which I presume to mean some toning rather that direct first-hand knowledge of the whereabouts of these coins since they were minted) led, at least in part, to the lower grades?

    Just curious...Mike

At the time rolls were being broken up of dimes, halves and dollars.

This was before PCGS and NGC so it was very common. In fact I still have an original roll of 43 half dollars. I have 30 years later been buying coins from an old timer who had a lot of stuff then and still does but he does not collect anymore but is a friend.

I rememebr watching him pick many of these coins straight from Original rolls as a boy. He would look for the one he felt was the best. The AU I need to review closer to see if there is album rub. I am really surprised by those grades and 2 in a row. I don't want to comment on them until I see them again but will post pictures.

It seems the big money coins fell a grade short. I may crack them out and resend them in again.

I think today was a bad day. Maybe the graders were borrowed from somewhere else? That makes two of us. Anybody else have a bad grades day? image
