40% Silver saved from the smelter...

I stopped by my favorite shop today before work and the owner who is a friend of mine was headed off to the smelters with a
giant box of misc. silver. All kinds of different stuff, Franklin mint issues, proof Canadian halves, commemorative olympic stuff, Libertads, old Francs, early assorted centavos, some interesting German pieces and about 100 assorted proof & unc Ike's.
I tend to think the Eisenhower obverse is a hideous looking egghead design, but have always like the reverse. I was pawing through it all this afternoon and just had to rescue some of these. I ended up picking out 10 proofs & 10 uncs and purchased them as well as a few AU centavo pieces from the 40's.
I know 40% silver is sort of the ugly redheaded stepchild for bullion stackers but I couldn't pass these up today for melt.
I wanted to purchase all kinds of cool looking "junque" but wasn't planning on spending a whole bunch of money....
It sure got me thinking about all the nice silver that's being smelted lately. If my favorite shop is any indication, (and I know it is) there's a whole lot of numismatic silver being destroyed all over the country.
All of these pieces were cut from plastic flat packs or cracked out of those proof plastic holders...

If that's the case, then whoever cracked it out wasn't paying attention. It's a premium date worth at least double melt in original government packaging.
