Tomorrow I get large vintage collection delivered to me - MORE SCANS - MANTLE

The collection is being delivered to me by two brothers who are in their late 60s and early 70s. The collections consists of mostly early-mid 1950s Topps and Bowmans, including a 1952 Topps Mantle with tape (PSA 1, I'm sure). They want me to dispose of the collection for them. Any suggestions on how best to do this (besides offering them on this board)? REA Auctions is my first thought, assuming the condition is as good as they say. Neither of them are collectors, and they are trusting and relying on me. One is a lawyer and the other is a doctor. I think most of the 1952 Topps set is there, but many have one of their names stamped on the back of each card. I'll take some pictures and oist scans later in the week. IS REA OR LEGENDARY OR MEMORY LANE A GOOD IDEA?

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

I have a card with Memory Lane right now for the Summer auction coming up. It is only 1 card that could go from $250 to $1,000. (Only 1 VCP recorded sell from several years ago of almost $900). They have been slow IMO in getting me the contract but were very good via email. I did not try to negotiate terms down as it is only 1 item of mid value. 19% buyers prem that I don't get action plus they take 15% of the hammer price.

I might have sent it to Sterling if I was starting over as I have been pleased with his auctions. (Even though I paid for my items a week ago and have not received them yet image )

Ouch. Even on a lower end card such as yours, there are good auction houses out there who take a comparable buyer's premium and wouldn't have charged you any consignment fee...Let alone 15%.

I have a mid grade one (a '4'), that looks WAYYYY better than any of the other '4's I have seen!! I am not asking a mint, but I DO want what I have seen weaker 4's go for. Not interest in being lowballed....

Didn't you consign the Reds collection you got to REA? Why wouldn't you go back to them? I know who I'd consign it to if you chose not to offer any of it up here but if you were happy with REA previously I don't know why you wouldn't go back.

I consigned the Reds collection to Hunt Auctions and was satisfied. I didn't go to REA because I believed that the items I consigned were more appropriate to Hunt than REA. Also, REA only wanted the WS rings and AS game ring and didn't want the bulk of the consignment.

I received the collection late this morning. It is massive (12 full binders with many sheets in each binder). The collection consists of 1952-57 Topps, 1952 Berk Ross, 1954 Red Heart, and probably complete sets of 1954 and 1955 Bowman. What is amazing is that each year contains numerous duplicates, in some cases as many as 8 of the same card. Unfortunately, the condition is not the best. The 1955 Bowman set is very nice. However, many of the early 50s had the name and address of the owner stamped onto the back. I've scanned three of the Mantles for your view. Any thoughts on how much the stamp hurts the value of a card? A lot, I'm sure.

The three Mantles will all grade "1". I'll try to take pictures of the albums tomorrow and post.

I believe all the stamped card would earn the MK designation

If you request they grade them without the qualifier, the stamp should drop the cards two full grades below what they would grade without it

    (I think)

cant request no MK qualifiers. No qualifiers is just for o/c Great cards

Regardless of condition, i would love it if any of those cards were in my collection. That has got to be a thrill looking through those binders! Can't wait to see more!

Well loved cards are always cool to see, they have character. Minty specimens are an awesome sight, but I have little desire to own them (1963 seems to be my personal transition year from ex cards to nm and better).

I agree with the comment about "authentic" - The Bowman I don't think will grade a PSA 1.

The "unoffical" Mantle rookie card. You show me an auction house that DOESN'T call the 1952 topps his rookie card....

At a glance I thought that was the 1951 Bowman Mantle, but now that you bring that up, what the heck is that card?

I can't think of an auction house that DOES call 1952 as Mantle's rookie card. They would lose my respect if they did.

Here is a better scan (I hope) of the Mantle card and of the 1952 Topps Pee Wee Reese. Sorry, but my scans seem to always show the back in a lighter shade than the actual gray on the cards. More scans tonight, I hope.

  • Used and Raw never looked so good. Enjoy them before they get sealed in plastic - never to be touched again.

    QUICK QUESTION:
Can I still buy binder sheets like that? The size that accepts Pre-'57 Topps?
