Athletes Who Have Driven Down their Autographs in Value

Bill Russell and John Riggins. I never paid big money for Russell, but I did pay good money for Riggins. His Certified Autographs are Worth a Quarter of What they used to be before he appeared in every product and did a ton of autograph shows. Bill Russell was a $500 Autograph before he did shows and appeared in Everything Upper Deck and Topps Put Out. Nobody has driven their autograph prices into the ground more than Russell. I am still amazed that Michael Jordan's Certified Autographs have stayed so High and still almost always break the $300 Barrier on Ebay. Jordan's Autographs have not really gone down one penny. Bill Russell sure has. You can get Russell certified cards for $50. 3 to 4 years ago they were almost always over a $100.

I didn't realize Russell was now signing prolifically. I've read stories whereby when he was a player, he wouldn't even sign for his own teammates - I guess he had a change in heart...

    ...likely because of money. LOL

  • I forgot Pete Rose. Bonds and McGwire and Clemens are Cold Autographs. Still wouldn't mind either one.
  • Bill Russell must be broke that is why he is Doing Shows like crazy.
  • He didn't play in the same era, that when you are a star brand 10's of millions is just average.

I think there are a lot of players that diminish the value of their sigs by signing TTM for free or for a very nominal charge. There really is no reason to pay the show fee for many guys and because of their graciousness TTM (which I appreciate) , ti impacts their earning power for autograph appearances.

this has probably been covered a million...or even a billion times in some thread somewhere but is there a "track record" of authentic autographs from getting back in mail....I"ve always gotten my in person that way you know it's from the person who's name is on item.....anyone know??? I'm not a big autograph collector but just curious.....

From what I've seen, Bonds graphs sell a lot cheaper than before his legal troubles/allegations started. I still see a bunch of people asking pre-trouble prices, but the ones I actually see transact, seem to do so at a much cheaper price then before.

There are a couple of sites that can help you with this that I've been/am subscribed to. sportscollectors.net (it's a subscription site, I think it was $14.95 a year) but it's nice for tracking those that sign TTM (or alledgedly sign TTM for free or for fee) , There's another one as well called Startiger that is a subscription site. I personally didn't care for that one, but a lot of people do.

I believe I've seen a thread on this board too where someone was attempting to make a list in one thread, but I don't recall the author, or the title of the thread to search for.

You can also go through my signed rookie card thread, and you will find many that sign TTM. I usually list in my thread if I got it TTM, at a show, purchase, etc.

Well most of your star player/high volume TTM's are likely autopens.

He's only doing 2 this year; the one that already took place was $175 for a standard auto and I believe more for premium items. Not sure what they're charging on the other appearance later this year. Don't think that price tag is going to drive down his auto value in general; the certified auto cards pricing is due more of lack of demand (people are chasing down a specific certified card or don't want his sig on a little trading card).

Bob Feller: He signed everything, and his signature is worthless.

Charlie Gehringer: Also signed too many items.

If we are only considering the financial value of an autograph I guess it would be great if a high profile personality would sign a few items for us then decide no more for anyone. I prefer those who sign generously. Bob Fellers autograph may not be highly valuable but for me it brings back memories of the few times I got to meet him and have a pleasant short conversation. That to me is priceless.

You beat me to the punch with Feller. For any of you that frequented the spring training circuit over the last 20 years, then you've probably met him 100 times as well. I have a picture with me and him in '95. I guess we were down at Winter Haven, but he showed up at the park wearing a full Indians uni and just walked around the park for a few hours chatting with folks and signing whatever they wanted. There were about a dozen of us who talked to him non-stop for about 30 minutes. We joked that the franchise wasn't paying him to appear, he literally was just hanging out... I would argue that his autographs are worth a lot to the folks that he signed for- because they are mostly related to memorable moments that he so willingly shared.

Stan Musial is a cheap auto considering his star power. But Stan would always say to people he met "Anyone who talks to me gets an autograph." What a great guy. I recently sent my '48 Bowman Musial RC in to him to be signed. I think it cost $100 which was well worth it to me, as I'm happy to help Mr. Musial out.

Bobby Hull has signed his autograph down to almost nothing.
Also Billy Williams and Fergie Jenkins.
Ron Santo signed alot but there is demand for his autographs now.

Funny thing is that 3 of the best selling cards for me now are non hall of famers. Pete Rose , Ron Santo & Joe Jackson.
  • Stan the Man is actually starting to get pricey his certifieds and authenticated baseballs have doubled in the last 5 years. TTMs are rarely autopens unless it is Gretzky and Montana. In the late 90's and early 2000's, I got the most of the Football Hall of Fame TTM and almost every Living Heisman Winner. Superstars like Oscar Robertson, Gordie Howe,Jagr, and Earl Campbell all signed my cards and they passed PSA. One of the first Autographs I ever got TTM was Jagr on his Score Rookie. Stamps and Autopens are actually very rare.

Does being an a$$hat come easy to you or do you practice very hard.

If you stopped looking for interracial midget tranny porn on your computer and did a little research you would know that Russell never signed because he didn't want to be bigger than the team. When he did start signing he did it for his daughter's charitable foundation.

You would rock back and forth crying like a petulant little turd if you experienced some of the things Russell did.

Please don't procreate...there are enough morons in the world already.

Bill Russell is one of my heroes in sports and life. However, like anyone, show him some cash and that's it. He's 77 years old.

  • Bill Russell was full of crap. He changed his tune when saw that big money could be made. When Bill Russell was Basketball and Sports Most Infamous NonSigner his autograph was worth $500 on a piece of paper and now his autograph is $50 a card. Russell's stance on autographs was rotten then and it is rotten now.
  • jlzinck, Russell came up with a bunch of stupid reasons not to sign for people that helped pay his salary. Russell also claimed "Nobody asked his father for his autograph" which another of his stupid reasons for not signing. Now Russell chases the money and tosses aside any principles he ever had. His autograph is in everything Upper Deck and Topps. Russell is one of the biggest Frauds when it comes to the fans and autographs. Russell is an insult to the fans and you are a moron. Nobody has driven down their autograph more than the hypocrite Russell.

SO cardsnbeads has sand in his vagina because a signature is now worth less than before...and he MUST be related to Bill Russell because he KNOWS the reason he signs more now and it's NOT THE REASON RUSSELL states. Someone should smack your father for not rubbing one out the night you were conceived.

Calling you a moron is an insult to morons all around the world.

Didn't you just post the reasons above? So you must be related to Russell?
  • jlzinckjlzinck Posts: 907 ✭✭
Actually I posted the reason that Russell stated himself. He signs for his daughter's charitable foundation. I was actually at the National in 99 when he did his 1st public signing and the items were $500...If I had shelled out that much I wouldn't be crying because he decided to do more signing.

Can everyone just please let us know how they really feel about Russell. image

As for Musial, he is seeing and up tick in value on his Auto's that were signed previous to the last couple years, as Musial's autograph is slipping with his age.

There are a lot of HOFers (especially baseball) whose autographs are very inexpensive because the supply is high. IMO that's a good thing.

If we want kids to collect baseball cards and memorabilia, their being able to afford some HOFer autographs on a modern pre-teen allowance is a fantastic entry point.

Mike hit it on the head. It's the guys whose escapades have diminished themselves (O.J., Bonds, Rose, etc.) who have driven down the value of their autographs. They shifted the demand curve.

  • How about Kobe Bryant and Lebron James? For the amount of popularity they both have, you can get their autos for "nothing". Now i saw that my man Grant Hill is signing again. I hope he doesn't drop his value down. Another Baseball guy to me is Albert Pujols, he signs everything also. I think his will start to decline. Willie Mays autos are actually pretty cheap for the great talent that he was.

Being broke has nothing to do with Russell appearing at card shows. If anyone could make the kind of money he does for just his signature, what fool would say no to that? Plus, the era he played in did not guarantee that he would he would be set for life.
  • Another reason why Russell's value has gone down is:

KIDS DON'T CARE ABOUT BILL RUSSELL. It's sad but it is true. Kids who are growing up would cherish a Lebron James or Michael Jordan auto. A teenager with disposable income isn't asking for a Bill Russell autograph.

You can insert almost any living "older" Hall of Famer from any sport. It's not kids who are paying for their autographs ... go to a show, it's all people 30 and above, unless it's the scant 20-something that is trying to start a HOF collection.

That's a good thing. Bob Feller and others like him have helped the autograph market more than hurt it. In fact, the spark that started autograph collecting for me when I was a teenager was getting Bob Feller's autograph and getting to shake his hand.
