Advice welcomed

Most of my collecting interest go towards precious metals, but I do own some sportscards.

I was looking at some pretty big sets going in a current auction house, and may decide to pull the trigger on one or two, but I have
a question because of a concern of mine.

I'm not sure how long my affection for these sets would last, and I may find myself having the urge to sell whole, or broken into pieces shortly down the road if I feel it's the wrong decision. Not to worry, I've done more foolish things then this, and it really isn't a big deal to me.

So my question is has anyone ever spent a good deal on a graded set from an auction house, broken it up, and at least realized close to what you spent. I know the fees from ebay would be substantial on let's say a 30k+ set or two. There is a real nice 71 graded topps baseball set and another one that I'm looking at, and would appreciate your comments pertaining to that question.

Plenty of guys make a living (or fund their hobby) by doing just that.

I'd be very conscious of VCP and ebay fees to formulate a bid that allows a clean getaway if you decide to bail on it.

    Good luck.

A totally "clean getaway" is unlikely, when you pay retail
    prices for cards.

I would just buy a few singles of players that I liked, until
the urge to squander big money in the middle of an economic
    depression passes.

I would agree that should just buy singles of the biggest stars if you want the items to retain as much value as possible.

Modern PSA graded sets are tough to move; I would consider 71 to be fairly modern. It's funny seeing people ask for $5000-10000+ for graded sets from 1980-1990's. Only a set registry collector cares about the Joe Nobody PSA 9/10 cards, to everybody else these cards are not desirable. Your typical regular release set is probably comprised of 95%+ Joe Nobody cards so just keep in mind you're paying a good chunk for common players.
