Hard to believe with all the great players in their history...that Jeter will be the 1st Yankee with

When you consider the huge names that played for them....Mantle,Gehrig, Ruth,DiMaggio,Berra,etc... It's kind of eye opening I think!

Yep. It is amazing. It seems like every great they've had either started with someone else (Ruth, Maris, Jackson, Winfield, etc.), had a Military interruption (Dimaggio, Dickey), had chronic injuries (Mantle, Mattingly) or met with an early demise (Gehrig, Munson). Yogi Berra is one of the few to spend a long career uninterrupted in pinstripes. All props to Jeter for being the first.

Don't Rickey Henderson and Dave Winfield count as Yankees?

Only Steinbrenner could answer that question! imageimage

I recently read "Yogi Berra Eternal Yankee" by Allen Barra. Very enjoyable. Yogi was not a good defensive catcher early in his career and missed some at bats there he also only played in 140 or more games 6 times limiting his at bats. He also was primarily a middle of the order guy who was there to drive in runs. A tremendous player.

<< <i>What' more about Jeter is that he's already got, by far, the most hits by a SS ever. He will be the only one to have gotten 3,000 by a SS and it may very well never happen again. >>

wasn't there a "little known" player from the Orioles who played quite a bit at SS with over 3000 hits?

granted Jeter will surpass and it will probably never happen again.

    yeah okay image

i can't remember why Ripken moved from SS to 3rd

they both had hitting skills beyond any modern day SS and can't leave A-Rod out, can we?

When Jeter reaches 3000 hits they will not all be from while he was playing SS.

I'm sure some have come from the DH position.

Wagner also has 3000 hits and was primarily a SS.
    Good for you.

What an awesome way to get hit # 3,000. It was done in true Bronx Bomber style. So frickin' awesome to watch with my sons.
  • What a great day to get hit 3,000. On O.J.'s birthday.

  • yep brett was right 3,000 was so hard for him to get oh yeah if he missed that he would've had 3,000 in the next bat or the 2 others there after.

I think Brett meant getting 3000 over the course of his career silly. Though I think him being the only player to win a batting title in three different decades (1976, 1980, 1990) is even more impressive.

<< <i>Don't Rickey Henderson and Dave Winfield count as Yankees? >>

There are 4 players from the current 3,000 hit club that played on the Yankees (Yankees hits in parenthesis):

    Dave Winfield (1300)
    Wade Boggs (702)
    Rickey Henderson (646)
    Paul Waner (1)

Winfield is the only player that can be considered "primarily" a Yankee but he still got only 1,300 hits as a Yankee. Even if you want to use a much softer criterion, non of these players got their 3,000th hit as a Yankee. None of this means anything to me particularly as one Yankee fan. The criterion for me would be that they get at least 3,000 hits AS A YANKEE. Huge extra bonus if they are a Yankee lifer as I expect Jeter will be.

What' more about Jeter is that he's already got, by far, the most hits by a SS ever. He will be the only one to have gotten 3,000 by a SS and it may very well never happen again. >>

And Waner is the only one who got to 3,000 hits before joining the Yankees. The others all got to 3,000 after leaving the Yankees.
