Ever buy sports cards that as a kid you were denied?

Was wondering if anyone else on these boards has ever bought a bunch of packs or cards of something that when you were a kid your mom or dad refused to allow you to buy.

I am about to turn 30 and earlier this week was thinking about how back in 1992/1993 my parents for some reason wouldn't allow me to spend my allowance on basketball cards or hang out at my local card shop which doubled as an arcade.

So I ended up going a little crazy this past week buying a bunch of junk wax from that year. The only box that I received so far was of Fleer Ultra 92/93 Series 2 and it was a really good box. 3 Shaq rookies along with the Shaq all rookie series insert, 3 Michael Jordan NBA Jam Session cards, 3 Alonzo Mourning rookies and 2 or 3 of pretty much every other key rookie.

I spent $27 shipped on this box and what is sad is that unless I land some PSA 10s even with what I opened out of it I came out a loser. image

Will say this it did bring back fun memories of the few packs I managed to sneak and get that year.

I wasn't denied any cards as long as I saved up for them. My parents were glad they knew where I was and that I wasn't hanging out on corners, etc. I did go crazy at one time buying things I couldn't afford as a kid.
  • Absolutely! My first pack was at my 8th birthday 76 Topps - for whatever reasons, mostly being poor and hungry, I never started or worked on that set. So a couple of years ago at an auction I bought a 76 set for $150 mainly because I could. I'm sure the stars were trimmed or whatever and I don't care one bit. Every once in a while I take the box out and flip through them. There are several biggies who had 76 cards but not 77s, such as Hank Aaron if I remember rightly...

I couldn't afford to buy Stadium Club back in '91, but I buy it now whenever I see it. I've paid $7 for series 1 boxes over the years. Back in '91, my local shop was charging $6 a pack.

When I was a kid, my mom wouldn't let me buy wacky packages. She thought they were gross.

Now I can buy as many wacky packages as I want! What now, Mom?

my first collection of cards came from my uncle, tons of vintage 50s & 60s, so i can't recall ever being denied cards, my parents were oblivious.....i dumped the whole collection to a neighbor kid and retained only a fraction of the collection's actual value.

i still apply the same concept today.

I WISH my parents would have denied me from spending most of my paper route money on 1989 Topps packs...

So based on this logic, in 20 years, I'll be going crazy buying 2011 National Treasures and Topps Five Star. Wait, nope, I won't be able to afford it then either. image

To answer your question, I've been picking up unopened of 89 Score FB, 90 Leaf and other stuff I couldn't afford. It's a great feeling breaking that stuff open.
