Cotton and Silver

SpoolySpooly Posts: 2,108 ✭✭✭
I have a one pound round of silver and was thinking of wrapping it in pure cotton rolls (old style bandages) to protect it. The new bandages are full of synthetic fibers and I don't trust them.

Pure cotton OK for long term storage of silver? I wish I could find holders for one pound silver rounds but have never seen one.

Thanks!

Cotton will allow some air (humidity) to pass.
Why don't you go with a freezer bag?

A food safe zip lock bag (sandwich bag) would make more sense. Double bag it if it gives you more piece of mind.

Just to play safe, you should go pick your own cotton from the field.

I'm trying to protect it from nicks and scratches and protect the surface. Cotton padding should do the trick..... I just want to make sure it wont hurt the surface for long term storage. The last thing I want is to get some weird toning or reaction on the surface.

I'd be inclined to buy an Intercept Shield bag, pad the cotton around the coin and then insert it into the bag. The only potential problem I see is whether or not the cotton itself is clean enough and pure enough to avoid reaction with the silver. Any point of contact between the cotton and the silver could result in an odd pattern if toning occurred. The Intercept Shield technology has a scavenger for reactive radicals.

Yes. They are polyethylene. Any product that is safe for food storage should be safe for coins.

If you have a vacuum packer, that would do the trick. The plastic is also heavy enough to protect it from nicks and bumps . . .

unless, of course, you use it for a discus ! ! ! image

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

I have one of these and I really like it. It's an impulse bag sealer, and the polyethylene supplied for it is low density, i.e. - soft. You can buy the plastic in rolls that are either 3" or 6" wide, and you can seal any item and then trim to an exact fit.

For best results, wrap the coin in good, old-fashioned watch papers. That is, a very fine 100% rice paper. It is the way professionals have been doing it for hundreds of years. Good quality 100% rice paper is also used for other purposes.... image

Or, you could wrap them in Taco Bell napkins. People pay crazy money for colorful toning. image

Stick it in a ziplock bag THEN wrap that in something padded. Voila
