bbcexchange 1980 topps vending box $140.00

I'm considering buying one but i have a few questions. are vending boxes a huge gamble or do i have a decent shot at pulling 9's or even a few 10's? Has anyone here bought a 1980 topps vending box from BBC within the last 3 months and how was it? Im going into this not expecting to pull a henderson but my main concern is the condition of the cards. Centering and print marks aside, i'm hoping for sharp corners but have never bought a vending box and i would like to get some imput from the forum. thanks!!

Take $140 an buy as many PSA 9's and 10's as you can off eBay. Probably a better investment.

I bought a 1980 Topps vending box from BBCE about a year ago... I only subbed five cards, but it yielded a PSA 8 Henderson (nicely centered), three 9s, and one 10 (Fisk, sold for $50). At $140, it's almost worth the gamble.

I recently bought a box and it yield two Henderson, and multiple HOFers. The first Henderson came back an 8 the second is at PSA right now with some of the HOFers. Overall, I thought it was worth the chance.

I opened a case a few years ago and it was hit or miss. There was lots of gradable stuff but the percentage of gradable is far less than you would think. What saved me was my case was littered with yellow letter variations. I thought they were trash at first until I started reading about htem on the boards.

Opened an 82 vending case a few months ago and I pulled about 20 ripkens, all but 1 were centered 65/35. This was hit or miss as well. the ripkens came 2 to a box for the most part and there were a couple boxes that I had to completely write off where an edge was dinged on almost every card.

It all depends on what you want to do. I went through the same thing a couple of months back with 77 vending boxes.

On the one hand, if you are not doing it for investment purposes or collecting towards a specific goal, then go for the box because that's more fun!

However, if you are looking to build on your 1980 Topps PSA collection (didn't mention you were) then I would go along with others' suggestions and just buy PSA 9s and 10s off of eBay.

For the amount I spent on my boxes I could have bought these cards from the 77 set: Dawson rookie, Ryan, Jackson, Schmidt, Brett, Yaz, and about 20 commons.

I bought three 1980 vending boxes from BBCE a few years back and pulled a Henderson PSA 9.

Of course it's a gamble, and with a negative expectation. If it was a sure thing, then Steve would always, and I do mean always, rip the packs himself and get them PSA graded to earn more profit.

Overall, there is no doubt, none at all, that in the long run ripping too many packs from any dealer, even a trusted dealer, is a definite loser as far as profit...however just from a collector standpoint for fun and entertainment, then it's always a winner with that perspective...and possibly sometimes ya might even get lucky. image
