OT Advice: Selling jewelry on eBay

I have some earrings (retail $2,499.99 in 2004) that I no longer want. Have any of you guys ever sold jewelry on eBay? If so, how was the experience? Any different than selling an expensive card?

I'm not expecting anywhere near retail but am thinking about starting the listing at $2,499.99 OBO and see what offers come my way since I'm in no hurry to sell...good plan?

Also, should I look somewhere else other than eBay?

Thanks in advance!

  • Expect nowhere near your price you paid. Diamonds are overpriced when you buy retail. Only experience I had was a ring that retailed for $1500, sold for $375 on the bay. You may have better luck using them as trade at the place you bought them, or another jeweler.

Go sell them to that pawn shop dickweed, you could probably get $30 out of him.

I have sold lots of jewelry on EBAY.

I would first try Craig's List for your item.

PayPal and "Buyer Protection" are the pitfalls on EBAY, unless
    you do local pickup and demand cash or Postal Money Order;
personal checks are OK, if you meet the buyer at their bank.

BUT, as noted above, the $2K+ price is likely not part of the
equation; thus, the chance of a PayPal problem is reduced.

If you have a freindly jeweler, get the item appraised on a
letterhead. List the item at about 25% of the appraisal OBO.
Unless you get a sucker, 15% to 20% of the appraisal is
prolly the best you can do on EBAY.

    ..............

Competition in the jewelry categories is severe on EBAY.

    5,719,666 results found for jewelry.

Prices range from $multi-millions to a few dollars.

Many of the women buyers are extremely difficult and grumpy
and dishonest. Some are pleasant, calm and nice. Men, shopping
for a gift, are the easiest to deal with.

The upside in jewelry sales on EBAY is a HUGE number of eyeballs.

I would definately list it on Craigslist and post that you will meet them at a Jewler of their choice it verify that they are authentic.
