+ grades for Economy subs coming soon

DennisHDennisH Posts: 14,040 ✭✭✭✭✭
This is an excerpt from an e-mail I got today from PCGS President Don WIllis:

Effective August 1, 2011 ...
* Plus grading will be offered for all Economy submissions, including both Standard as well as Secure Plus. There is no extra charge for this. This is a very popular request.

Sigh...
Five MS64 Morgans that I sent in for regrading are due back any day. My timing was rotten on this. image
When in doubt, don't.

Is plus grading already available on Modern submissions??? I thought it was but on an order of 50 raw coins I just got back I didn't get a single plus grade... made me think that plus grades maybe weren't available. I figured out of 50 coins at least one would plus... heck I had over 30 coins grade MS68, am I to believe not even one was a 67+ or a 68+???

Answered my own question and just called... plus grading isn't currently available on Modern submissions (so maybe there are a few 68+ coins in my batch afterall!!!) image

    Here is the complete e-mail:

First of all, thank you very much for your continued support of PCGS. We are doing our best to provide the kind of professional service that you have come to expect. I hope we are fulfilling that objective. If we are not, please contact me directly.

Effective August 1, 2011 we will be introducing a couple of important changes in response to your requests as well as our continued efforts to combat counterfeiting.

PCGS Secure Plus will be expanded to include Economy level submissions. The dealer price for Economy Secure Plus will be $25 (vs. Standard Economy of $18). We have received many requests for Economy Secure Plus.

Plus grading will be offered for all Economy submissions, including both Standard as well as Secure Plus. There is no extra charge for this. This is a very popular request.

Coins graded “Genuine” will now be allowed in Secure Plus holders. This is another popular request.

All Chinese coins must be submitted through the Secure Plus service. As part of Secure Plus each coin is scanned, photographed, sniffed and undergoes a metal composition analysis. The metal testing is very helpful in detecting counterfeits. The availability of a photograph is also very effective in deterring counterfeiting. All valid certification numbers can be checked on our website. If there is a photograph (which is always the case for Secure Plus coins) the photograph will be displayed next to the coin information. We believe this change will go a long way towards combating Chinese counterfeits.

As a reminder a submission form must be entirely Standard or Secure Plus. The two services cannot be mixed on a single submission.

Each of these changes will be effective for all submissions received beginning August 1, 2011.

If you have any questions or comments feel free to contact me, Trista King, Manager of PCGS Customer Service, or Sandy Locker, PCGS Dealer Liaison.

    Thanks for your continued support.

Collector of Large Cents, US Type, and modern pocket change.

So that means that now every submission that does NOT have a plus carries an inferred MINUS?

Not at all. There are many, many coins that are simply "solid for the grade". Nothing wrong with them.

I sent in a box of 20 from my registry sets at the Baltimore Show two weeks ago for regrades. Those HAVE to go regular, so I'm hoping for some bumps with a few +'s. I'm happy to hear that economy submissions will be considered for + grades.
