I'm sick to death of it.

streeterstreeter Posts: 4,312 ✭✭✭✭✭
This last year this first page of the coin forum has become infested with little kiddies and their problems. Don't misinterpret me. Everybody has problems to deal with. Even me but I do not think the coin forum is the proper place to solve them.
The coin forum seems to have been taken hold by the throat of a bunch of malcontents and whiners who post insignificant coin dealing problems, personal vendettas and generally exhibit poor social graces. And these people offer nothing of general interest. Their problems seem to originate in one area, the internet. Ebay is their world.

IN FACT, they have partially succeeded in dissuading some of the extremely knowledgeable posters from participating in the forum with incessant mindless chatter, arguments and baiting and opinionated flaming. Did you ever notice how so many one year or less members know so much but have no profile and have exhibited nothing of a significant nature, yet are so eminently qualified on just about every subject?

They are barristers without a license, ebay boobs without a clue, people who need to step back and go outside and get some sunshine.

That is all. Thank you for allowing me to rant.
Have a nice day

it comes in waves. some veterans either step away for a few weeks, start new coin-related threads, or bring favorite old threads back to the top for another round of interesting coin talk

others enjoy the threads that are part melodramatic soap opera, part people's court, and part Jerry Springer. As long as the melee not a rerun I'll usually watch, but not jump in

I couldn't agree more. It seems the relative anonymity of a "Forum" creates a sense of courage with certain personality types and they feel compelled to air every thought they have. These folks like to create a constant sense of upheaval to distract them from their daily bothers and they don't seem to know how to use a PM, email, or telephone to solve their problems.

This is a FABULOUS resource for those of us serious about collecting coins and it is unfortunate that over time a few bad apples have spoiled the barrel to a degree. Hang in there "streeter", the silent majority are indeed numismatists with a deep affection for coins and a strong willingness to assist and educate their fellow collectors. While the idiotic rantings of a few are certainly annoying, I simply skip those threads and read the coin related ones. I totally agree with you though, it is ridiculous and frustrating.

This is not always the case. I've seen some relevant non-trashy threads concerning schemes and ebay antics from buyers. Small timers or not, it doesn't matter. We all share an interest in one thing. Coins. eBay is just another venue people go through acquiring such coins.

I guess with that said, I'd like to see your coin collection! Big timer! imageimageimage

Problem posts are warranted when advice is being sought. Using a post to motivate a BST seller to deliver is unwarranted, use PMs. If PMs don't work then out the bad seller (or buyer) with a thread to warn others.

It is often true, that to enjoy what is good, you sometimes

have to tolerate what is not good. The Forum is a bit like the tides

we have periods of uplifting and informative threads and there are

times when rancor, pettiness and anger seem more dominant. You

just wait a while and things do return to what passes for normalcy

here. Perhaps it is just the rotten economy, it is making people

frustrated, mad and a bit edgy. image

I've learned a litlle bit from reading a few eBay threads, but in general the issues are repetative and often petty.

However, this is a public forum, and many of us do progress in knowlege over the years.

I liked your rant; I have taken a forum vacation, where only recently I have posted. I do like to see posts like Bear's, and of course I read almost anything posted by the OP image

There are, imho, times for a "problem" post to appear. However, a few certain members seem to be involved in more than their "fair" share of these and they seem to use the forum as their personal whining grounds. What is interesting is when additional info comes out, they usually don't seem to be the ones looking that good.

For last night's "fun", those threads appear to have gone to poofdom.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Agree. Bad eBay or BST transactions should be exposed so other forum members can be warned who to avoid dealing with. Also, these threads don't have to be opened and read. If you don't like them it's easy enough to avoid them.

Totally agree with everything said there , the problem with yesterday is we are left knowing there's a wiseguy trading US coins on the BST and that puts a lot of people under suspicion, they will lose business for sure.Roadrunner was right in what he said in the other thread before it got zapped. All yesterdays antics only served to make the BST a less trusted place , i guess this is how we roll eh ?

And a well deserved burial, that.

What is interesting is that if I see a problem post from a veteran here, I'll generally look. Things like stolen coins, counterfeits or bad paper to dealers - good warnings to others of us who deal or trade every day. Those posts have been directly helpful to me a couple of times over the years.

The chatter about "he scammed me for $14" because the payment got lost in the mail just gets tiresome.

The trolls, whiners and haters come and go. I'd say the forum used to be quite a bit worse, that the moderators have banned many of the worst offenders and a good many of the "sock puppets" alt-IDs. I write that, even with today's spats, that the 100+ posts hater and sock puppet threads used to be much more popular.

The unfortunate reality is that coin collectors and coin dealers tend to have below average people skills. Adults that spend a lot of time on the Internet tend to have below average people skills. Combine the two and there is going to be a lot of temper. Mix in the above average incomes typical for those here, and that adds an element of ego.

Overall, I tend to encounter more jerks in the coin hobby as a percentage than elsewhere. Sorry, but that's my experience. Yes, there are nice people, generous people as well, but the jerks, whiners and haters like to have their say and unfortunately will always be with us, as long as there are these kinds of forums. It is often best to ignore them, give them as little attention as possible, because much of what they are posting is "look at me, look at me," little kid kind of stuff.

Good post, and there are a lot of thing I don't personally like seeing here...daily random thoughts that make this forum look like personal diary, mundane or problem new purchases followed by dozens of admirers adding their congratulations, AT coins posted with no one brave enough to tell the OP what he bought, etc.

But it's better for us grumpy guys to learn to live with our little irritations than to begin censoring this forum.

    Thanks streeter.

I have been absent , at least from posting, for some time.

Reason: the lack of significant posts, and inane replies. This kind of reminder is helpful, and may lead to more informative/deeper articles.

Also, if the posters could actually describe their topics better, as Mark Feld harped on for years, this place could really improve.

I used to think the Ebay rants were a waste of time and eSpace, but now I am strarting to sell on eBay for the first time, and I can now
see how allot of poster make valid and warrented complaints. Already, I have had photos stolen for a coin, and the coin photo is not even for the correct year coin!

Thanks for the kind words Dale. I have never met you, do not know you but know OF you from this forum. I can admire your coins and wished that when I had started collecting ..a long time ago..I would have been as focused as you and possibly I could have come half as close as you to achieving what you have.

I come here for fun. I come here to get my mind off of my business. A business that requires me to ..basically..be perfect ...or fail.

I hope that I can motivate myself to continue to return.

I agree that these types of threads seem to come in waves, but there have been enough waves in the past that I only visit once a month if that, or when I have a question that I would like answered. I used to spend a great deal of time just lurking and gathering an awful lot really good info.....picking which interesting thread to read first, then moving along to another.
However, the prevalence of sniping, flaming, and back & forth spats kept me away for long periods of time. It's good to hear that the moderator is clamping down on these activities - maybe I will stop by more often!

    Well put, Streeter! image

I think there's a fine line between "does it really belong here" and what's the norm. There are a lot of threads directly pointing at ebay whether in humour or warning and they can be fun threads or in the case of warnings helpful , then there's the other stuff.Usually spottable by a one sided whingefest with no link and suspect reasons for not just outing the whole tamale.

I think overall the forum would improve it the "QUOTE" feature was taken away.

too often, posters (me included) type something which seems OK in the moment, but on retrospect...we wish it would just vanish.

But of COURSE, someone will QUOTE it and drag the whole shooting match along.

If the forum bothers you, take some time away.

Also, in general, if people would refrain from typing something directed toward someone else that they would not have the gumption to stand in front of that person and say to their face....things would be a lot nicer.

Its useful i think when a certain point is addressed , like the point of typing something regrettable , perhaps the typer of notes that wishes they would "go away" is the one requiring a break ? No ? just kinda seems.. lol

You could always try to fix it with technology. It would be easy enough for the site admins to create a sub-forum for internet auction related issues. Threads that belonged there would be out of sight on the general board. It would also be a nice place for the moderators to stash threads which no useful information to the community as a whole.

Come to think of it, a subforum for novice collectors would be nice too, and would leave the general board open to questions and topics more suited to established individuals in the hobby.

    Sonething people may overlook.

It is not always about the money. Many times it the way something is handled that is annoying.
